Junior Natalia Meray homered and drove in three runs, boosting the Gael offense behind a complete-game performance in the circle by sophomore Kara Zazzaro.

TOWSON, MD – The Iona College softball team won its final game of the Demarini Tiger Clash on Sunday, defeating Towson 5-1. Junior Natalia Meray homered and drove in three runs, boosting the Gael offense behind a complete-game performance in the circle by sophomore Kara Zazzaro.

GAME SUMMARY

Zazzaro got the nod for Iona, retiring the side in the first after surrendering a leadoff walk.

The Gaels got on the board first, starting the second inning with back-to-back singles. Ciarra DiGuilio went first to third on a single through the right side by Kaelene Walter. DiGuilio would come around to score on a foul-ball sacrifice fly off the bat of Meray.

Zazzaro motored through the second and third innings without a blemish, retiring the Tiger lineup in order in both frames. Meray tagged a two-run shot in the top of the fourth inning, bringing DiGuilio around and giving Iona a 3-0 lead.

Towson got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Madison Wilson's double drove home a runner. Zazzaro stranded two runners in scoring position with a strikeout and a groundball.

Jasmine Temple started an Iona rally with a two-out double in the top of the fifth inning. DiGuilio reached on an error by the shortstop that allowed Temple to score. Meray drove in her third run of the afternoon with a single to the opposite field, putting the Maroon & Gold ahead 5-1.

Zazzaro retired the final nine batters of the afternoon, finishing a complete game and ending the tournament on a high note.
