TOWSON, MD – The Iona College softball team won its final game of the Demarini Tiger Clash on Sunday, defeating Towson 5-1. Junior
Natalia Meray homered and drove in three runs, boosting the Gael offense behind a complete-game performance in the circle by sophomore
Kara Zazzaro.
GAME SUMMARY
Zazzaro got the nod for Iona, retiring the side in the first after surrendering a leadoff walk.Â

The Gaels got on the board first, starting the second inning with back-to-back singles.
Ciarra DiGuilio went first to third on a single through the right side by
Kaelene Walter. DiGuilio would come around to score on a foul-ball sacrifice fly off the bat of Meray.

Zazzaro motored through the second and third innings without a blemish, retiring the Tiger lineup in order in both frames. Meray tagged a two-run shot in the top of the fourth inning, bringing DiGuilio around and giving Iona a 3-0 lead.

Towson got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Madison Wilson's double drove home a runner. Zazzaro stranded two runners in scoring position with a strikeout and a groundball.Â

Jasmine Temple started an Iona rally with a two-out double in the top of the fifth inning. DiGuilio reached on an error by the shortstop that allowed Temple to score. Meray drove in her third run of the afternoon with a single to the opposite field, putting the Maroon & Gold ahead 5-1.

Zazzaro retired the final nine batters of the afternoon, finishing a complete game and ending the tournament on a high note.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Meray's homerun was the first of the season for the junior and the second of her career. She also recorded her first multi-hit game of the season and has now collected a hit in five of her seven games played.
- Walter and DiGuilio also had two hits. DiGuilio reached base in three of her four plate appearances and scored three runs.
- Zazzaro hurled a complete game, allowing one run on two hits and striking out four. The win was the first of the season for the sophomore.
- As a unit, Iona was 5-12 at the plate with two outs, compared to an 0-7 mark for Towson. The Gaels were also 5-11 with runners on base.
UP NEXT
Iona is scheduled to play five games at the Mercer Bears Classic in Macon, Georgia next weekend. The Gaels will play two against Florida A&M and Western Carolina and one game versus Mercer. The tournament runs from March 13-15.
