First Career Goals for McNally, Lopez Push Iona WSOC Past Wagner

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team topped Wagner 2-0 at Mazzella Field on Sunday afternoon. The Gaels wrapped up non-conference play with a victory on the day the program honored graduate students Kelsie Kearns and Katie Benson and senior Mackenzie Meixner.

Pregame was focused around honoring Iona's three tri-captains for their dedication to the program over the last four-plus years. When it came down to game time, underclassmen Kate McNally and Mia Lopez stole the show.

An early attack by the Maroon & Gold led to three corners, though Benson was the only Gael to register shots, both of which were saved by Erin Kelly. The pressure proved to be too much for Wagner early on when Benson and Faith Preziosi combined to set up McNally to score the first goal of her collegiate career in the sixth minute. The low line-drive shot with her left foot beat the keeper to the right corner, providing the home team with an early advantage.

Sam Rom, making her second start of the season in net, made her first stop on Wagner's McNally, the younger sister of Iona's Kate, in the 11th minute. After a flurry of substitutions, Iona's offense settled down. The next shot came in the 31st minute from Kayla Barbosa, which Rom handled. An earlier shot that did find the back of the net for the Seahawks, was whistled off for a foul before the chance.

Mia Lopez had the final two shots of the half for Iona, both of which were stopped by Kelly. Rom finished the first half with two more saves, keeping Iona in front as the match headed to halftime. Rom ceded goalkeeper duties to Caroline Scott for half number two.

Wagner's Emma Roe nearly found an equalizer in the opening moments of the second half, but her shot pinged off of the crossbar. A second chance minutes later was turned away by Scott. Offensively, Wagner never had another shot that tested the Iona keeper. In turn, the Maroon & Gold would find insurance.

Rookie Mia Lopez used a feed from classmate Kedarjah Lewis inside the box, firing a left-footed laser inside the near post to grant Iona a late 2-0 lead. Iona closed things out, moving to 6-7-0 overall this season with the win.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Both McNally and Lopez registered the first goals of their respective collegiate career in the victory. The goals also represent the first points of McNally and Lopez's career.
  • Benson had the primary assist on the first goal of the match, her first point of the season and her second career helper.
  • Kiera Haggerty, Lewis and Preziosi also added assists in the match. Preziosi's fifth assist increased her team-lead in points to 11. Lewis' helper was the first of her career and seventh point, while Haggerty's 2021 point total rose to seven as well.
  • Rom earned the second win of her career, moving to 2-0-0 in her sixth appearance this season.
  • Iona's sixth win of the season puts them one shy of the program's highest win total during the Todd Plourde era. The win also marks the fifth victory over a non-conference opponent this season, the most in a single-season since 2014.
  • Iona officially completes non-conference play with its best winning percentage (.625) in school history. The Gaels have finished above .500 in non-conference play three times in program history (.588 in 1992, .556 in 1993, .625 in 2021).
