Havrilla's 10 Saves, Hogan's Goal Lifts Iona WSOC Over Niagara

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team defeated Niagara 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field. Junior Samantha Hogan scored the lone goal of the match, her second of the season, to help the Gaels win their fifth straight contest.

Emma Havrilla was forced to work hard in the early going, making three saves in the opening 11 minutes of action. Niagara controlled possession for the first half of the period, though Iona began to settle itself and create chances. The Gaels' first chance would find twine when Hogan deflected a pass with her right foot, angling it past the keeper and giving the Maroon & Gold a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute.

Havrilla made two more saves before the half ended, preserving Iona's 1-0 lead as the two teams headed to intermission in New Rochelle. Chances came much more often in the second half, but Havrilla reamined stout in net for Iona. After six saves in the opening half, she gladly watched Niagara's first shot of the second half sail high over the net, the first time a try from the Purple Eagles missed the target.

The next shot from Niagara came via Florence Vaillancourt in the 61st minute, but was stopped by Havrilla. Emily Drake had a chance of her own minutes later, but she shanked the shot much too high. Niagara had a pair of shots in succession turned away by Havrilla in the 67th and 69th minutes.

Niagara, having a hard enough time finding an equalizer at even strength, was forced to play down a player after Lauren Kelch was issued a second yellow card with less than 14 minutes to play. Despite the disadvantage in players however, the Purple Eagles created pressure and had the majority of opportunities towards net. None would find the back of the net though, and Iona earned a victory on senior day at Mazzella.
