LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL - The Iona College men's basketball team dropped its first game of the 2021-22 campaign in a 72-65 loss to Belmont in the 2021 ESPN Events Invitational semifinal at the Field House at ESPN's Wide World of Sports. Trailing by two points with 3:28 remaining, the Gaels were outscored 7-2 in the final moments in the loss. The Maroon & Gold falls to 6-1 on the season.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
- Freshman Walter Clayton Jr. scored all of his team-high 13 points in the second half. He shot 4-for-8 from the field, 2-for-4 from deep and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe. He added five rebounds, an assist and a block.Â
- Sophomore Nelly Junior Joseph posted his second straight double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. It was his second straight and seventh career double-double, the first time in his career he has posted one in back-to-back games. Junior Joseph is one rebound vs. North Alabama away from four straight. The 15 rebounds set a new career-best for the Iona big man.
- Graduate Tyson Jolly had eight points and six rebounds, classmate Elijah Joiner posted seven points and eight boards and junior Quinn Slazinski added eight points and five rebounds in the loss
- Graduate Dylan van Eyck recorded six points, six rebounds and a team-high five assists.
- The Bruins' leading scorers entering the contest, Ben Sheppard and Nick Muszynski chipped in 25 and 19 points respectively.
TEAM STATS
- Iona out rebounded Belmont 50-29 but suffered its first defeat with a double-digit rebounding margin since January 12, 2020, vs. Niagara at the Hynes Center.
- The Gaels converted more field goals and allowed just one more three-point field goal. The difference was a 17-9 deficit at the free throw line.
- Another key stat was Belmont's 11-2 advantage on points off turnovers. Eleven of Iona's 13 turnovers came in the second half.

The Gaels will compete in the third-place game of the ESPN Events Invitational on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN vs. AP No. 4 Kansas.
