Iona WSOC Drops Season Opener To Monmouth

The Gaels returned to the pitch for the first time since closing out the 2019 regular season with a 2-0 victory at Rider, 496 days ago.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's soccer team dropped its season opener to Monmouth, 3-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Mazzella Field. The Gaels returned to the pitch for the first time since closing out the 2019 regular season with a 2-0 victory at Rider, 496 days ago.

MATCH SUMMARY

Iona and Monmouth, the four-time defending conference champs and 2021 preseason favorite, spent much of the opening 15 minutes of action shaking off the rust.

The Hawks were the first to strike, scoring the first goal of the MAAC season 16 minutes into the first half. Ashley DellaPietro found twine off of the assist from Sarina Jones. Iona goalkeeper Emma Havrilla had a flurry of shots sent her way before up to that point, but the Gaels back line and keeper had held the Hawks off of the scoresheet for the time being.

The remainder of the first half was much of the same after that. In total, the two sides made 14 substitutions in the first 45 minutes of play, which ended with the visitors leading 1-0. When all was said and done at the conculsion of the first half, Monmouth totaled 11 shots to Iona's one, which came off the foot of graduate transfer Nicole Whitley. The Maroon & Gold's lone shot was stopped by Maddie Ogden; Havrilla made two saves for the Gaels.

Monmouth would take a 2-0 lead early in the second half, courtesy of a penalty kick from Sarina Jones. Iona's Emily Drake took down a defender in the box, prompting a whistle from the official and awarding the Hawks with the penalty kick. Monmouth's senior stepped up, burying the try in the lower right corner, past the outstretched arms of Havrilla.

Minutes later, freshman Kayla Thomas had a chance to cut the deficit in half, but her shot was stopped by Ogden. Another rookie, Graceann Murphy, had her own try at goal, seven minutes later, denied by Ogden. The icing on the proverbial cake for the Hawks came in the 68th minute. Sammy Jones volleyed a pass from outside the box towards the middle for Lauren Karabin, who put it over the head of Havrilla and into the back of the cage.

Iona did not manage another shot and the Hawks coasted to a 3-0 victory in the season-opening tilt at Mazzella Field.
