Iona Softball Loses Rain Soaked Game on Sunday

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College softball team lost the first game of a Sunday doubleheader with Canisius, 10-2 in six innings. Game two was called after the end of the top-half of the first inning due to rain.

GAME ONE: (CANISIUS 10, IONA 2)

Canisius got to Zazzaro in the top half of the opening frame on Sunday, capitalizing on a Gaels throwing error. Paradowski reached by virtue of the throw in the dirt, eventually stealing second and coming around to score on a base hit by Gianna Fazzolari. Christie McGee-Ross also scored on the opposite field single, giving the Griffs an early 2-0 lead.

Alexis Churchill started the first game for Canisius, tossing a clean inning after her team gave her the early advantage on the scoreboard. Sydney Costan drew a leadoff walk in the second, scoring the game's third run after Paradowski singled through the left side of the infield. Zazzaro stranded two runners to end the inning.

Jamie Sheeran got Iona on the board in the bottom of the second, leading things off with a missile that cleared the fence in left center. Alexis Bailey singled with one out but moved no further after Churchill retired Emma Capuano and Morgan Ritchey to end the frame.

Zazzaro's one and only clean inning came in the top of the third, though it was far from clean defensively. A two-out error put a runner on first, then back-to-back singles, the latter of which was an infield single, loaded the bases. Zazzaro kept Canisius off the board though, getting Hufford to ground out to third.

Canisius pushed even further ahead in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs to make it a five-run game. Two runs came across to score on a ball that did not make it past the mound. Zazzaro fielded a ball put in play by McGee-Ross, firing it past Ritchey who was covering and down the rightfield line. The errant throw allowed Paradowski to score from second, then McGee-Ross motored around the bases and scored after Brianna Buck lost her footing trying to retrieve the ball down the line. The third run of the frame came around to score after back-to-back two-out singles for the Griffs, making it 6-1.

Churchill retired Iona in order in the bottom half of the fourth, striking out Buck and Bailey. A run for the Griffs in the fifth, followed by three more in the sixth put Iona down 10-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, needing two runs to keep the game going. Walter reached on an error in centerfield and DiGuilio walked to put the runs Iona needed on base with nobody out. Sheeran drove home Walter with a one hopper through the left side, making it an eight-run game. Churchill settled down though, retiring the next three batters to enact the mercy rule and secure a game one win for the Griffs.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Zazzaro was credited with the loss, her second of the season and her first loss in a game that she started. The junior pitched five innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits, five walks and had eight strikeouts.
  • Sheeran hit her fourth homer of the season, a line shot that left the yard in a hurry. The rookie was responsible for Iona's only two runs, driving home a run on a single in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Bailey made her second career start, finishing 2-3 at the plate. It was the first multi-hit game of Bailey's career.
  • Meray extended her hit streak to a team-leading six games with a third-inning single to centerfield.

AROUND THE MAAC

  • Siena completed the weekend sweep of Saint Peter's, winning game one 7-2 and taking the second game 3-2.
