Iona Edged Out In Regular Season Finale

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona women's lacrosse program was edged out 12-8 against Manhattan in the regular season finale for the Gaels. The Maroon & Gold were led on offense by six different goal scorers, with two coming from both seniors Caton Brisbin & Madi Kochanek. 

Senior Elyse Darcy, got the start in net for the Gaels, the net minder made some big saves in the final couple minutes to keep the team in it. The Norwalk, CT native made 10 saves allowing 12 goals in 60 minutes. As a team Iona were 13-19 on clear attempts, and caused five turnovers. 

GAME SUMMARY

Manhattan opened the scoring four minutes into the game, Emily Stewart answered less than :50 seconds later to knot it up at 1-1. Over the next 16 minutes the Gaels watched the jaspers go on a 6-0 run to jump to a commanding 7-1 lead with just 9:04 left to play in the first half.

In the last minutes of the first half the Maroon & Gold's offense picked up, Gabriele Thornton found the back of the net with 7:14 left on the first half clock. Sara Stewart and Caton Brisbin scored the games next two goals for Iona, they trimmed the Jasper lead to 3. Manhattan was able to sneak one past Darcy 2 minutes before the halftime break to extend their lead to 4. 

Both offenses slowed down in the second half. The first four goals of the second half came in the first eight minutes while the last four came over the course of 22 minutes. Regan Mullins of the visitors opened the scoring in the second half to extend their lead to five. Madi Kochanek scored her first of the game and eleventh of the season with 25 minutes left to play. Caton Brisbin notched her second of the game to trim the Jasper lead to 3.

At the 22 minute mark Manhattan extended their lead back to four, Kochanek found the net once again with 14:08 left to play. Iona inched even closer after Kati Paavola scored her third of the season to make it a two goal game, closest it's been since the 23 minute mark in the first half. With it being a two goal game the Jasper defense stood tall over the last 13 minutes keeping the Maroon & Gold off the board. The cross town rivals scored the last two goals of the game to secure the win, 12-8.

UP NEXT

Iona will be the 9th seed in the MAAC Championship starting on May 1. They will be taking on the 8th seed in the opening round, that game will be host by the #1 seed.
