Iona WSOC's Season Comes to Close in MAAC Quarterfinals

The Maroon & Gold lost 3-0 in their first postseason appearance since 2017.

LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Iona College women's soccer team's season came to an end on Friday afternoon in the MAAC Quarterfinals at the hands of Siena. The Maroon & Gold lost 3-0 in their first postseason appearance since 2017.

MATCH SUMMARY

Iona's Andrea Ferrer began the match with a shot from well outside the box that was corralled by Boermeester. A counter-attack for Siena created a chance for McNelis, but her shot was blocked before it reached Angelina DeCicco in net.

The Gaels had the first corner kick chance, taken by Kiera Haggerty, but it did not result in a shot for Iona. Siena began to get its offense in motion from that point on. The Saints registered six shots in a seven-minute span, spending the majority of that time in the attacking third of the pitch.

The first two of the aforementioned six shots were blocked by Iona defenders. The Gaels had blocked three of Siena's four shots up to that point. After a shot sailed wide from Siena, Iona gained possession for a minute before a foul set the Saints up for a couple more opportunities. DeCicco made her first stop of the game on a set-piece try, getting a hand on Lomino's try and forcing a corner. Bagnall nearly scored in the next minute, and most likely would have if it weren't for the body of Taylor D'Alessandro making the save while she hugged the left post of the goal.

Iona breathed a collective sigh of relief as they avoided some early trouble. The relaxation phase didn't last long though. Siena finally broke through in the 40th minute when Katrina Kurtz's grounded shot from about 25 yards out beat DeCicco and gave Siena the lead.

The Saints nearly found an insurance goal late in the half, but DeCicco stopped McNelis in the closing minutes to take the match into half with Iona facing a 1-0 deficit.

The Gaels had the first chance of the second half, just like they did in the first, but Nicole Whitley's shot attempt missed high over the crossbar. Siena grabbed control of possession from that point on and put heavy pressure on Iona, looking to build upon the one-goal lead.

DeCicco made a huge save with 23 minutes left, creating a counter-attack opportunity for the Gaels. Iona could not capitalize, but the two-on-one stop by DeCicco kept Iona within striking distance for the moment.

Minutes later, Sarafin took a shot from inside the box that deflected off her own teammate, Monds, off of a set-piece chance. The ball was heading for the back of the net, but Iona caught a break when the ball ricocheted off the shoulder of Monds and was cleared out.

The onslaught of shots by the Saints continued; a couple of minutes later, Monds' header missed just above the crossbar off of a feed from the corner. Then it was McNelis who watched her header sail over the crossbar with DeCicco well off of her line. The persistence paid off for Siena in the 77th minute when Bagnall scored her first goal of the season to give the hosts a two-goal cushion.

Monds would seal the deal with five minutes remaining, scoring past DeCicco to make it 3-0 and push Siena past Iona and into the MAAC Semifinals.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Iona had the first shot on goal of the match in the fourth minute, but did not register another. Siena finished with a 7-1 edge in shots on goal and an 18-4 advantage in overall shots.
  • DeCicco made her first start of the season in net for the Gaels, making four saves.
  • Haggerty finished with two of Iona's four shots. Ferrer and Whitley were responsible for the other two.
  • Kelsie Kearns and DeCicco were the only two Gaels to play a full 90 minutes.
  • The postseason appearance was the first for the Maroon & Gold under head coach Todd Plourde. It was the program's first postseason game in a season where not every team qualified since 2012.

AROUND THE MAAC

  • No. 2 Quinnipiac defeated No. 7 Fairfield, 1-0, in double overtime on a golden goal by Rebecca Cooke.
  • No. 4 Rider scored twice in the second half to come from behind and beat No. 5 Manhattan, 2-1.
