NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College softball team finished off a strong weekend with a pivotal game two victory over Marist, 7-3, on senior day at Donald E. Walsh Field. Head coach
Katie Jansson and the Iona softball staff honored the team's five seniors prior to today's doubleheader.
GAME ONE: (MARIST 12, IONA 3)
Jansson submitted a unique lineup in game one, starting all five of Iona's seniors in the opener. Alana Evans got the nod in game one, but did not register an out. She faced three batters, allowing a hit, a walk and hitting one batter before giving way to Ciarra DiGuilio in the circle. Marist capitalized, scoring three times in the opening frame.
Calista Phippen, who started and pitched well in a losing effort yesterday, began game one in the circle for the Red Foxes. Handed an early lead, Phippen made quick work of Iona in the bottom of the first and her offense provided her with some more cushion the next inning. With runners on the corner and one out, Iona's defense took a sure out at second, allowing Sam Freeland to reach on a fielder's choice and letting Hailee Jantorno cross the plate to give Marist a 4-0 lead.
The Red Foxes extended their lead to 8-0 in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of Ali Milam. Phippen carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth, needing just three outs to finish off a five-inning no-no, due to the mercy rule.
Kayla Haywood was retired to begin things in the fifth, but Evans singled through the five-six hole to notch Iona's first hit of the afternoon. Emma Capuano followed with a carbon-copy style single between third and short, putting two runners on with one out. Jamie Sheeran, who did not start in game one, pinch hit for Maggie Foley and drew a walk to load the bases for senior Courtney Blasko, who started behind the dish in the opener. She looped a 3-2 offering from Phippen over short into left center, plating a pair of runs and keeping Iona's hopes alive in the fifth. The Gaels added one more on a Natalia Meray single, trimming Marist's lead to 8-3.
The Red Foxes piled on in the sixth, however, doing the majority of their damage off of freshman Alyssa DeJianne. Kaley Coltrain hit a three-run shot to left field that pushed Marist's lead to eight runs again, and Julia Blarr singled home another run later in the frame to push the lead to 12-3.
Phippen closed the door on Iona in the sixth, setting down the side in order to help her side to a six-inning victory, the first of the weekend for the visitors.
GAME TWO: (IONA 7, MARIST 3)
Kara Zazzaro started game two for Iona, the first time she has done so this season. The junior set down the first two batters she faced, but allowed a solo homer to Coltrain, allowing Marist to open the scoring as they did in game one. A two-out free pass to Milam amounted to nothing after Zazzaro got Shea Walsh to line out on the first pitch she saw.
Meghan Haff started in the circle in game two for the Red Foxes and was immediately greeted by Chilcott, who doubled down the line in left. Meray drew a four-pitch walk to follow, then moved up sixty feet, along with Chilcott, on a wild pitch. With two ducks on the pond and nobody out, Haff got a huge out number one when she punched out Sheeran. Iona loaded the bases with one away after DiGuilio reached on a fielder's choice, beating out a grounder to short after Caroline Baratta was forced to look back Chilcott at third base. Evans watched four pitches out of the zone to earn a free pass and a run batted in, tying the game at 1-1. Haff then threw two more out of the zone to Haywood, forcing manager Joe Ausonio to bring in Nicole Teague. Entering in the middle of the at bat, Teague threw two more out of the zone to force in another run. She got an out on a Capuano fly ball, which allowed DiGuilio to score. With runners on the corner and two away, Haywood stole second and Evans scampered home without a play after the ball got loose at second. Morgan Ritchey grounded out to end things in the first, but not before the Maroon & Gold grabbed a 3-1 lead.
Zazzaro settled in after allowing a run in the first, pitching three straight scoreless frames before Iona's offense added to its two-run lead in the fourth. The inning started with back-to-back singles from Ritchey and Brielle Hill, but Teague got Chilcott to strike out and Meray to pop up to stymie the threat. Sheeran worked a walk though, loading the bases for DiGuilio. She came through for her team, singling up the middle and plating two runners to push the lead to 6-1. An error at third on a hard-hit ball by Evans plated the inning's third run before Teague got Haywood to fly out to right.
Zazzaro worked around a one-out triple in the fifth and a leadoff single in the sixth to register two more clean innings and protect the Gaels' 7-1 lead. The Red Foxes put a runner on second in the seventh, and with two outs a double from Coltrain cut into Iona's lead. Milam singled through the right side to make it 7-3 and keep things alive for Marist, but Zazzaro got Walsh to bounce out to Ritchey at second and help Iona split on senior day.
