Iona WSOC Defeated On The Road At Loyola Maryland

BALTIMORE, MD - The Iona College women's soccer team lost 5-1 to Loyola on Sunday evening at Ridley Athletic Complex. The Greyhounds scored four goals in the second half and led by five before Andrea Ferrer scored her first goal of the season to get the Maroon & Gold on the board.

Loyola scored the only goal of the first half, an own goal that deflected off of the post and an Iona defender. Each side registered just two shots in the opening 45 minutes; Emma Havrilla made the only save.

Freshman Sam Rom started the second half in net for Iona, allowing four unanswered goals. Loyola scored twice in a five-minute span to increase its lead to three just over 10 minutes into the second half. They added one more 10 minutes later, and then the fifth 10 minutes after that. Ferrer's goal came in the 87th minute, off of a free kick by Alexis Atkinson, who was credited with the assist.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Ferrer's goal was her first of the season and the third of her career.
  • Atkinson's assist was good for the first point of the sophomore's collegiate career.
