NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University women's soccer team escaped with a point after playing to a 0-0 tie with Canisius on Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field. A pair of desperation saves were the difference in the match, helping keep the Golden Griffins off the scoreboard and earning the Gaels a draw.
MATCH SUMMARY
As entertaining of a scoreless match as one could ask for, there were plenty of chances between both sides to break the ice, but neither team could find twine.
Canisius had arguably the two best chances to score. The first of which was a ball volleyed up into the air from just inside midfield that landed in front of Emma Havrilla and ended up behind her heading towards an empty net after it was misjudged. Havrilla raced back towards the goal line and went into a full-extension dive to smack the ball away just before it snuck over the goal line. The Griffs second chance came late in the first half when a header from inside the box hit the inside of the post to Havrilla's right, bounding towards the back of the net before Mackenzie Meixner cleared it at the very last second.
Iona had a limited amount of chances, perhaps the best was a strike from Kiera Haggerty that knuckled and skipped off the turf but was trapped by Jessica Jones late. Iona's other chances came off of setpieces, but the Gaels never connected passes enough to get a goal.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Havrilla made five saves and earned her fourth shutout of the season. The grad student now owns 13 shutouts in her career, surpassing Jessica Martin's mark of 12 for second most in program history. She is one clean sheet shy of matching the program-best mark of 14, set by Trista Rivera.
- Canisius owned advantages in shots (15-10) and shots on goal (6-4). Each side had four corners apiece and Iona finished with six saves, compared to Canisius' four.
- Half of Iona's last six matches against Canisius have ended in a draw. Today's decision moves the series history to 11-10-5 in favor of the Maroon & Gold.
- Today's draw was Iona's first against a conference opponent this season and the Gaels' first in league play since March 23, 2021, a span of 18 matches.
