BRONXVILLE, NY - The Iona University volleyball team fell in three-sets (16-25, 20-25, 20-25) to Siena on Sunday afternoon, at the Meyer Athletic Center. The loss snaps the Gaels 10 game home winning streak, dating back to last season as Iona currently falls into third-place in the MAAC standings with a 9-4 conference record.
Match SUMMARY
Set 1 (16-25)
Following consecutive kills from
Morgan Madasz Iona led 5-2 and a few points later another kill from Madasz put the Gaels in front, 12-10. However, Siena answered with a momentum changing 10-1 run, giving the Saints control of the opening frame. Siena took advantage of several attack errors from the Gaels during the stretch, and now leading 24-16, Hailey Hinkel closed out the first-set for the Saints with a kill.
Set 2 (20-25)
Siena used an 8-3 run to grab an 11-5 lead that later extended to 20-11 following another kill from Hinkel. Despite trailing by nine the Gaels managed to climb back into the set, using an 8-2 run, propelled by kills from
Greta Stjade,
Elena Bianchi and
Julia Thomas. Trailing 23-19, Bianchi chipped in her third kill of the set but Siena answered winning the final two points to end Iona's rally and grab the second set.
Set 3 (20-25)
Early kills from
Nerin Valasakos and Thomas helped Iona jump in front 7-4, and a few points later, back-to-back kills from Bianchi and Madasz pushed the lead to 9-6. Following a service ace from
Hope Matschner the lead grew to four but Siena countered with a 6-2 run to deadlock the frame at 14.
Fleur Wiersma broke the tie with a kill, beginning a 5-1 run that forced Siena to burn a timeout, trailing 19-15. Siena responded following the timeout, ending the set and match on a 10-1 run, clinching the road victory for the Saints.
STAT LEADERS
- Matschner chipped in a team-high 27 digs, pushing her total to 580 through 25 matches.
- Samantha Juran (9) Mackenzie Wiggins (9) Tamara Pichardo (7) rounded out the defensive efforts for Iona.
- Madasz (9) and a season-high (7) kills for Thomas led the Gaels offensive attack.
UP NEXT:
The Gaels travel to upstate New York next weekend for a two-game road trip beginning next Saturday, Oct. 29 against Niagara. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
