Iona WSOC Eliminated From Postseason Picture With Loss at Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona University women's soccer team lost to Fairfield, 4-1, on Wednesday evening at Lessing Field. With tonight's result, Iona falls out of the MAAC playoff picture and finishes the regular season at 8-7-4 overall and 3-6-1 in league play.

MATCH SUMMARY

Iona fell behind early in the contest, conceding a goal in the 15th minute of the match. Fairfield's keeper Katie Wright corralled the first shot of the night on either side, a shot by Kiera Haggerty in the ninth minute. Caroline Kelly netted the first goal of the night, opening the scoring at Lessing Field. The second shot of the night for the Stags also found the back of the net, a 33rd minute strike by Maddie Theriault that put Fairfield on top 2-0.

The Stags would carry a  2-0 lead into the second half, with the Gaels needing to mount a comeback to win and earn a spot in the MAAC postseason. Kedarjah Lewis scored an unassisted goal in the 69th minute, giving Iona some life with an ample amount of time remaining in regulation. Unfortunately for the Maroon & Gold, Fairfield would add goals in the 80th and 90th minute of the contest to sink the Gaels and officially eliminate Iona from the MAAC postseason picture.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Lewis scored Iona's lone goal of the contest, her team-leading fifth of the season. It was her first goal since September 1 against Lafayette. It was the 10th goal of the sophomore's career.
  • Havrilla played all 90 minutes in net for the Maroon & Gold, registering one save and facing 15 shots.
  • The Gaels wrap up the regular season in eighth place in the MAAC standings, losing the tiebreaker with Saint Peter's.
  • Iona is now 6-15-4 all-time against Fairfield. The Gaels had won two of the previous three matchups, but have not beaten the Stags at Lessing Field since 2015.
