Iona Water Polo Drops Game at Princeton

PRINCETON, NJ – Without a goal until late in the third period, the Iona University men's water polo team's late-game rally fell short in a 14-5 loss to no. 9-ranked Princeton University in a Northeast Water Polo Conference road match here this evening.

GAME SUMMARY

Graduate co-captain Justin Ginsberg, senior co-captain Mohamed Refaat, junior co-captain Andrew Miller, freshman Sole Fratila and freshman Matthew Mischlich scored one goal each for the Gaels (8-14 overall, 1-6 NWPC). Iona scored five goals on 27 shots with four assists.

In goal, senior Kyle Laufenberg had seven saves on 19 Princeton shots, including stopping a five-meter penalty shot, one steal and 12 goals against. In the fourth quarter, freshman Aleksandar Slavkovic had two saves on five Princeton shots and two goals against.

On defense, the Maroon and Gold made ten steals with two each by junior James DiSalle and freshman Rastko Jevdjovic. The Gaels blocked two shots. Iona drew seven Princeton kickouts with two by junior Luksa Vlasic, including two five-meter kickouts, while being ejected seven times, including two five-meter ejections. The Gaels turned the ball over eight times. Iona scored one man-up goal on seven opportunities, while Princeton made four man-up goals on seven chances.  

With 1:13 gone in the match, Princeton got on the board first, then added a second straight goal for a 2-0 edge with 4:20 left in the opening period. The Tigers converted a five-meter penalty shot to go up three 3-0 with 2:09 remaining as the Gaels failed to score in the first quarter. The home squad needed only 30 seconds into the second period for its fourth straight goal, then struck again for a 5-0 five-goal advantage with 5:28 remaining. Princeton tacked on three more scores, including a man-up goal, for a 8-0 halftime lead as the Iona offense did not record a first-half goal.

Another Princeton unanswered score with 1:40 gone in the third period continued the Tigers 9-0 run. After Laufenberg smothered a Princeton five-meter penalty shot, the Tigers answered for a 10-0 margin with 4:31 to go. Miller finally got Iona on the board with 2:10 on the clock to cut the home edge to nine 10-1. Two more straight Princeton goals upped the home edge to 12-1 going into the final period.

Refaat scored the Gaels second goal with 40 ticks gone in the final period to slice the Tigers lead back to ten 12-2. Ginsberg took advantage of a man-up chance to pull Iona within nine 12-3, but Princeton answered on its next possession for a 13-3 edge with 4:31 left. Fratila's goal just 45 seconds later chipped the home lead to nine 13-4, but the Tigers went back up ten 14-4 on their next chance. With Mischlich's goal with 40 ticks left, Iona outscored Princeton 4-2 in the final period as a late rally fell short.

Next weekend, the Gaels head to New England to take on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., and no. 14-ranked Harvard University at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Gaels face Brown University at 3 p.m., and Connecticut College at 6 p.m.
