Iona Swimming & Diving Drops Dual Meet Contest to Holy Cross

WORCESTER, MASS - Fresh off a pair of wins Friday at the Hynes Pool over St. Francis College, the Iona University Swimming and Diving Team hit the road Saturday, traveling to the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester and came away with first losses of the season.

Meet Summary

The Iona women fell to the Crusaders 174.5 to 119.5, despite a combined seven wins from Isabella Nicholson, Victoria Novinskiy, Ashley Benkert and Tristan Urso.
 
The Iona men ended up on the downside of a 166-128 score, with three wins from Michael Faughnan, two by Dylan Riccio and another from Daniel Hadary.
 
Nicholson, a senior Tri-Captain, dominated the sprint freestyle events taking the 50, 100 and 200-yard Freestyle races with respective times of 24.61, 53.62 and 1:56.43.  Novinskiy, a freshman, won both the 200-Butterfly and Individual Medley races at 2:09.30 and 2:10.31, respectively. Benkert, a sophomore, won the 100-Butterfly at 59.26 as Urso touched first in the 500-Free at 5:21.90.
 
Nicholson, Benkert, Novinsky combined with Megan Josephs to win the 400-Freestyle relay at 3;37.67.
 
Faughnan picked up where he left off Friday, winning easily the 1000-Free at 10:07.84 and returned the very next race to win the 200-Freestyle at 1:42.15. The Junior Tri-Captain also won the 500-Freestyle at 4:43.38.
 
Dylan Riccio, a freshman, won both the 1 and 3-Meter spring events for the second day in a row, with respective point totals of 232.05 and 245.10. The impressive Harrison, New York native jumped up on Iona's all time top 12 list on the 1-meter event to fourth all time and second all-time on the 3-M event list in dual meet competition.
 
Hadary, a versatile graduate student took the 100-Free race at 48.38 and anchored the 400-Free relay to a win along with Faughnan, Liam Pyatt, Robert Heim at 3:11.95.
 
"You have to give Holy Cross credit today, they came out strong in their first meet of the year, winning both the women's and men's 200-Medley Relay events and showed a very balance line-up," commented Coach Nick Cavataro. "We will get back in the water on Monday and prepare for the Homecoming Invitational next Saturday."

Iona hosts Sacred Heart University and Wagner College next Saturday at the Hynes Pool with diving at 9:00am and swimming at 11:30am.
