FAIRFIELD, CT - In a battle between the top two teams in the MAAC, the Iona University volleyball team fell short in a three-set (16-25, 22-25, 25-25) contest to the Fairfield Stags on Sunday afternoon at the Recplex. The road loss snapped the Gaels six game winning streak as Fairfield still remains unbeaten in conference play with the Gaels still sitting in second place, at 7-2 in MAAC play.
Match SUMMARY
Set 1 (16-25)
Powered by a balanced offensive attack, Fairfield jumped out to a 9-5 lead, but a few points later, a kill and an ace from
Greta Stjade cut the deficit to three. After the Stags opened a six point advantage, two attack errors and a kill from
Nerin Valasakos trimmed the lead to three, however, the Gaels couldn't get any closer. The Stags used a 9-3 run to close out the opening frame, capitalizing on five kills during the stretch en route to taking the early lead.
Set 2 (22-25)
With Four ties in the beginning portion of the second set, neither school managed to grab any separation. Kills from
Jen Soto,
Elena Bianchi, and
Fleur Wiersma paced the offense in the early going but soon after, the Stags used a 12-4 to open up a 22-13 lead. However, the Gaels countered, going on a 9-2 run to climb back into the set after four kills from
Mackenzie Wiggins and two from
Morgan Madasz, propelling the run. Following a timeout, Fairfield regrouped and managed to close out the set on a kill from Sarah Daniels, pulling with a set of the victory.
Set 3 (15-25)
Back-to-back kills from Soto brought the Gaels within a point in the early stages of the third, but a few points later, Fairfield used a 10-1 run to stretch the lead to its biggest of the afternoon. Kills from
Emma Vu and Wiggins helped trim the deficit but Fairfield proceeded to regain a double-figure lead following consecutive attack errors on Iona. Valasakos chipped in the final point for Iona on a kill but Fairfield closed out the set and match on a kill to complete the three-set victory.
STAT LEADERS
- Hope Matschner recorded a match-high, 17 digs raising her mark to 460 on the season.
- Tamara Pichardo chipped in 13 assists, bringing her total to 343 helpers on the year.
- Wiggins (6) Stjade (6) Soto (4) and Bianchi (4) led the offensive efforts.
