LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL - The Iona University volleyball team season came to an end after a four-set loss (23-25, 25-18, 23-25,17-25) to Quinnipiac on Thursday night at the HP Field House. Despite the loss,
Hope Matschner poured in a match-high 40 digs and
Emma Jacobs recorded her first-career double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs to lead Iona.
Match SUMMARY
Set 1 (23-25)
To start the match, Jacobs,
Greta Stjade and
Jen Soto recorded kills, giving Iona the 3-2 advantage. Later in the set following a kill from Aryanah Diaz, Quinnipiac took a 14-11 lead but Iona responded with a 5-1 run that forced the Bobcats to call timeout. Trailing 20-17, Once again Iona erased a three-point deficit, following kills from Jacobs and Wiersma and consecutive aces from
Tamara Pichardo, that gave Iona the late lead. Wiersma recorded a clutch kill to pull Iona within two points of the set, but it was Quinnipiac who won the final three points of the frame to grab the early lead.
Set 2 (25-18)
Iona never trailed in the second-set, quickly going out in front 7-2, forcing Quinnipiac to burn an early timeout. The Gaels kept the attack on and following a kill from
Greta Stjade the lead stretched to 17-11. The Bobcats got within four points but a kill from
Julia Thomas and a Quinnipiac attack error, set Iona up with several set-points. On the ensuing point, Thomas leveled the match up at a set apiece with an ace.
Set 3 (23-25)
Despite trailing 7-2 to begin the third-set, Iona responded with a 9-2 run to retake the lead.
Morgan Madasz and Thomas sparked the run with multiple kills, and a few points later, following a Quinnipiac error, Iona took a 16-13 lead. However, Quinnipiac countered with a 11-5 run, setting up the Bobcats with numerous set-points. A kill from Madasz helped Iona fight off the first set-point but a kill from Diaz brought Quinnipiac a set away from the victory.
Set 4 (17-25)
With their season on the line, Iona came out firing, Using four consecutive aces from Pichardo to take a 6-0 lead a few points later, a kill from Wiersma gave the Gaels a 10-1 lead. Stjade registered a kill to push the advantage to 12-3, but Quinnipiac responded with a match changing 15-2 run to take control of the fourth-set. The Bobcats extended the run to 19-4, and despite kills from Wiersma and Soto, Quinnipiac closed out the match on an ace to advance to the MAAC semifinals.Â
Leaders
- Matschner recorded 40 digs for the fourth time this and fifth in her Maroon & Gold career. The junior libero finishes her '22 season with 767 digs while averaging over 7.06 D/S.
- Pichardo recorded a double-double with 21 assists and 13 digs also recorded a career-high seven aces, ranking her tied for sixth all-time for most in Iona history.Â
- Soto (9) Stjade (7) Wiersma (7) and Thomas (6) rounded out Iona's offensive attack.
- Samantha Juran recorded 18 assists and 5 digs in the loss.
