Late Run Propels Santa Clara Over Iona MBB, 86-76

LAS VEGAS, Nevada - A late Santa Clara run led to an 86-76 defeat of the Iona University men's basketball team in the showcase game of the 2022 Las Vegas Holiday Showcase at Orleans Arena. Sophomore Walter Clayton Jr. set a career-high with 26 points and six three-point field goals to lead the Gaels.

THE RUNDOWN

Iona led by as many as seven points in the first half, following three straight Clayton Jr. trifectas that turned an 18-16 deficit into a 25-18 lead just over the midway point of the frame. The Broncos chipped away and knotted the score at 31-31 with 4:43 remaining. Santa Clara took a four-point lead into the break.

A 10-4 run to start the second half gave Santa Clara a 10-point cushion just over three minutes in. Fifteen of the next 21 points made it a one-point game, following sophomore Anton Brookshire's conventional three-point play with 12:16 remaining. After a Santa Clara layup and a three-point play put the score at 60-54, a 7-0 run gave Iona its first lead since the five-minute mark of the first half with 10:15 left in the contest. The game remained within one possession for the next seven minutes. Clayton put Iona ahead 74-72 with 3:14 remaining. The Broncos ended the contest on a 14-2 run with 10 points coming from the free throw line.
