HONOLULU, HI - The Iona University men's basketball team improved to 1-1 at the 2022 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center in an 83-72 win over Seattle University. The Gaels jumped on their opponent at the start of the first half and withstood 35 second half free throws by the Redhawks in the 11-point win. Junior
Nelly Junior Joseph scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds and was supported by classmate
Daniss Jenkins with 19 points and eight assists in the victory.
THE RUNDOWN
Iona scored the first 10 points of the contest and jumped out to a 16-2 advantage less than five minutes into the game. Rookie
Sadiku Ibine Ayo - making his first collegiate start - scored all seven of his points in the first three minutes while Jenkins had five and Junior Joseph four in the strong start. Foul trouble began to plague the Gaels as starters Ibine Ayo and
Walter Clayton Jr. combined for just 11 minutes in the first half with two fouls a piece. The 14-point lead was Iona's largest as Seattle rebounded from a 1-for-13 start from the field and did not allow the Gaels to extend their advantage. Trailing 29-19 with 4:51 remaining, the Redhawks scored the final 10 points of the half to knot the score at 29-29 at the break.

Much like the opening minutes of the contest Iona jumped on Seattle and scored 12 straight in the first 2:31. Jenkins and senior
Osborn Shema accounted for all of the offensive damage combining for all 12 tallies. Iona regained a 14-point advantage with 11:37 to play on a steal and score by rookie
Cruz Davis to put the score at 54-40. A free throw contest ensued in the final 11 minutes. Seattle made up just three points over the timeframe and got as close as eight. But prior to the final minute, converted just two field goals while connecting on 21 from the charity stripe. Over the final 11, the Redhawks were 4-for-15 from the field, 2-for-8 from long distance and 22-for-25 from the line. Iona was 8-for-17 from the field and made all but one of their 14 free throw attempts.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Junior Joseph scored his 26 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field and 10-for-14 from the charity stripe. In addition to seven rebounds he had two blocks and two steals.
- Jenkins' 19-point, eight-assist effort was supported with three rebounds and two blocks.
- Shema netted nine points and seven rebounds to go along with a team-high four blocks in 24 minutes.
- Senior Quinn Slazinski had nine points and led with eight boards adding two assists, two steals and a block.
- Ibine Ayo added six rebounds to his seven early points and also had two steals. He was a +21 in 20:58 on the floor with Iona holding a 55-34 edge.
- Plagued with foul trouble, Clayton Jr. had a nine-game double-digit scoring streak snapped with a season-low five points in just 13 minutes of play. His presence on the floor was extremely valuable as he was a +18 with the Gaels out scoring their opponent 39-21 while he was on the floor.
THE OPPONENT
- Cameron Tyson had a game-high 27 points. Iona held the top scoring threat and one of the top deep threats in the nation to 6-of-21 shooting from the field and 3-of-12 from distance. He converted 12-of-15 free throw attempts.
- Alex Schumacher also went to the line 15 times, converting 11. He had 17 points on 2-of-9 shooting from the field. He was recorded as drawing 11 Iona fouls.
- Brandton Chatfield scored 10 points before fouling out late in the contest.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Iona out shot (47.5% - 29.3%) and out rebounded (41-37) Seattle. The held the Redhawks to a 6-for-27 (22.2%) shooting effort in the second half.
- The Gaels had 16 assists and 15 turnovers, while their opponent posted 11 assists and 12 turnovers.
- Seattle held a 16-7 advantage in points off turnovers and 13-8 in second chance points. Iona dominated the paint 36-22.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Iona improved to 5-6 in the state of Hawai'i. Following 0-3 and 2-1 performances at the Rainbow Classics in 1990 and 2001 and 2-1 at the Hawaii Pacific Classic in 1998.
- For the 6:17 that Iona's starting five were in the contest, they held a +18, outscoring Seattle 23-5 averaging 3.7 points per minute and 1.9 points per possession. By contrast Seattle's starters were -18 in 4:48 while on the floor together and outscored 20-2.
- There was a combined total of 51 fouls and 72 free throws in the game. It was just the fifth time in the last 13 seasons Iona experienced a combined 70+ combined free throws and first since last January at home vs. Manhattan. The 45 free throw attempts by an opponent were the most in the Rick Pitino-era at Iona and the most since No. 1 North Carolina attempted 46 on Nov. 18, 2007. Among the six times since 2001 an opponent shot 44 or more free throws in a contest; it was Iona's first victory.
