GAME SUMMARY

After a slow start by both offenses in the first quarter, the Gaels used a strong second quarter to take a commanding lead and never turned back. Senior Katherine Meyer opened the scoring roughly nine minutes into the game off a free position opportunity. LIU was able to tie the game up with :13 seconds left on the clock in the first.

Iona out scored LIU 5-2 in the second quarter, goals coming from Marshall, Thornton, and Varada. Senior Megan Collins picked up her two assists of the game on Iona's first two goals of the second frame. Varada's goals were another capitalization of the free position opportunities.

Third quarter was all Iona once again, the Gaels outscored LIU 4-1 and were able to keep the Sharks off the board in the third until the last 15 seconds. The Maroon & Gold entered the 4th with a six goal lead. The NY native Varada secured another free position opportunity two minutes into the final quarter and did not miss her mark, she extended the Iona lead to seven.

Two goals by LIU was able to shrink the Gael lead to five but the deficit was too steep to climb, a goal by Meyer with 1:17 left to play sealed the deal for the Gaels.
