Iona SB Falls to Furman and Presbyterian on Saturday
GREENVILLE, SC - The Iona College softball team lost a pair of games on Saturday to wrap up a weather-shortened GVL Showdown. Furman topped Iona 6-2 in game one and then the Gaels lost 7-3 to Presbyterian.

GAME ONE: FURMAN 6, IONA 2

Kara Zazzaro made her second start of the season, receiving some run support from the offense before heading out to the circle. Brianna Bailey and Jessica Chilcott walked to begin the game and moved up 60 feet on a double steal. Natalia Meray grounded one back to the mound and Furman cut down Bailey trying to score for the first out of the afternoon. With Sheeran at the dish and runners on the corner, Meray broke for second and induced a throw to second. She was tagged out in between first and second after a rundown, but it allowed Chilcott to score from third. Sheeran struck out looking on a 3-2 pitch to end the frame.

A hit by pitch and two free passes loaded the bases for the Paladins with one out in the bottom half of the first. Two more walks brought home a pair of runs and gave Furman a 2-1 lead. A ground ball and a strikeout got Zazzaro out of the first, though the home team scored twice without a hit in the frame.

After a 1-2-3 second inning for both squads, Iona put a runner on to begin the third on a Kayla Haywood single. She was called out on the bases for leaving early however. In Furman's half of the third, two runs came across on a two-out double to make it 4-1. Zazzaro stranded a runner to end the inning, but would allow two more runs in the next inning. Two more runners came around to score on a single after a walk and an infield single earlier in the frame. A grounder back to Zazzaro would end the fourth inning, though Furman led 6-1.

With two down in the top of the sixth, Chilcott doubled to bring around Haley Weaver, who reached on an error with one out in the inning. It was all that Iona could manage offensively however, as the Maroon & Gold stranded Hannah Collins at first after a two-out infield single in the seventh. Furman topped Iona 6-2 in the first of the Gaels' two games on Saturday.
