Iona SB Beats Stetson, Falls to Mercer on Saturday

MACON, GA - The Iona College softball team split a pair of games on Saturday at the Mercer Bears Classic, outlasting Stetson and falling to Mercer. Iona's victory over the Hatters was highlighted by a seventh-inning solo shot by Jamie Sheeran.

GAME ONE: IONA 5, STETSON 4

Samantha Rieb started in the circle for the Gaels, tossing a clean bottom of the first after Iona's offense stranded a leadoff runner in Haley Weaver to begin the afternoon. The Gaels got on the board in the second frame, doing work with two outs in the inning. Emma Capuano, who drew a one-out walk, stole second and managed to come around to score on an infield single by freshman Destiny Nardello.

Stetson answered in its half of the second, tying things up at 1-1. A leadoff walk followed by a pair of fielder's choices left a runner on first with two away. She would cross the plate after an error behind the plate, but Rieb induced a grounder to end the inning.

Weaver reached base to begin the third inning, singling to the opposite field. She stole second and third, putting herself 60 feet away from scoring the go-ahead run with no outs in the frame. Jessica Chilcott drew a base on balls, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, which also pushed Weaver across to make it 2-1. Sheeran hit a one-out double to plate Chilcott and pad Iona's lead to 3-1. Back-to-back fly outs stranded Sheeran in scoring position to end the top of the third.

Rieb worked through her fifth inning and then watched her offense cushion the lead in the top of the sixth. Kaylin Flukey singled to begin the frame and Nardello followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Kayla Haywood put a ball in play, scoring the Gaels' fourth run on a fielder's choice. The Maroon & Gold nearly added more, but Chilcott's liner to right field turned into a double play when Nardello was cut down at the plate trying to tag up, ending the Gaels' half of the sixth.

After facing four batters in the sixth and allowing four straight singles, Rieb gave way to Kara Zazzaro with Iona's lead trimmed down to 4-3. An error on the infield loaded the bases with nobody out, putting Zazzaro in deeper water early into her appearance. A pair of strikeouts helped immensely, but Stetson would tie the game on a hit batter. Zazzaro escaped by notching her third punchout of the inning.

Sheeran smashed a solo shot with one out in the seventh inning to put Iona on top once more. The first two runners reached for Stetson in the bottom half, but Zazzaro struck out two more batters and secured the victory in relief with a pop up on the infield.

GAME TWO: MERCER 7, IONA 4

The Maroon & Gold put runners on first and second to begin the game, but could not score before sending Alyssa DeJianne to the circle for game two against Mercer. DeJianne worked around a pair of walks to begin the home half of the first, stranding runners on the corners to keep things scoreless after one full frame.

Nardello stayed hot, beginning the second inning with a double to center. She moved up to third on a two-out single by Haywood, but Brianna Bailey was retired to end the second inning. The Bears got on the board first after a pair of extra-base hits to start the second. With the bases juiced and one out, DeJianne managed to escape the inning without any more runs coming across.

Weaver and Chilcott repeated their first-inning efforts, stringing together back-to-back singles to begin the third inning. Natalia Meray grounded out, but moved both runners up 60 feet into scoring position with one out. Sheeran brought home the tying run with a grounder to short, but it was all Iona could cash in.

The home half of the third started smooth for DeJianne; she retired the first two batters, but two walks and an error on the infield loaded the bases and put her in hot water. Another walk put Mercer ahead 2-1 and was followed by a bases-clearing hit that blew things open. Mercer led 5-1 after three innings.

Iona's offense did its own damage with two outs in the next half inning, trimming Mercer's lead to 5-2. Consecutive two-out singles by Bailey, Weaver and Chilcott pushed a runner across, but a pop out ended the rally for Iona.

The Bears added runs in the fourth and the fifth to make it 7-2 and the Gaels' offense struggled to get anything going until the seventh. Sheeran hit her second homer of the day, another solo shot, in Iona's last turn at bat. Flukey followed with the first bomb of her career, but it wasn't enough as Iona fell to Mercer, 7-4.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Sheeran hit her first two homers of the season today, the first of which proved to be the game-winner in Iona's 5-4 victory over Stetson. She finished the day 4-8 at the dish with four runs batted in.

  • Flukey's late homer in game two was the first of the sophomore's career.
  • Weaver finished the day 4-8 at the plate across the two games, scoring a pair of runs and stealing three bases. She was caught stealing in game two for the first time this season.
