NEW ROCHELLE, NY - After a close first three quarters the Iona women's lacrosse program pulled away in the fourth for their program best seventh win in a row defeating the Wildcats of New Hampshire 18-11. Senior
Megan Collins finished the day with a team high six points, two goals and four assists.
GAME SUMMARY
Freshman Kira Varada notched a team high 4 goals and added one assist. The other Gael goals came from Gabriele Thornton, Leah Marshall, Emma Rippon, Amber Brewster, Alexa Maggiacomo, Katherine Meyer, Emily Stewart and Kati Paavola. As a team Iona assisted on half of the 18 goals. The Maroon & Gold fired 39 shots with 28 of them on net. Â
In net for the Gaels Sofia Votto picked up her sixth win of the season, the freshman made eight saves and allowed only 11 goals, good for a .421 save percentage. On defense Marshall led the team with two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Four different Gaels had three or more draw controls with Varada leading the way with six.   Â
It took over four minutes before either team found the back of the net, but Iona was the first to with Thornton opening the scoring on a free position shot. Two minutes later Maggiacomo took a beautiful feed from Collins and extended the Iona lead to two. UNH got on the board with 6 minutes left in the first and cut the lead to one. The Gaels outscored the Wildcats 4-2 in the second quarter, goals for the Gaels came from Marshall, Stewart, and two from Varada. Entering the halftime break Iona led 6-3. Coming out of the break the Iona offense was sluggish, not scoring for the first seven minutes.Â
The visitors came out hot scoring four straight goals and took a 7-6 lead with 9:01 left in the third. Over the last eight minutes the gaels kicked it up a notch scoring seven goals. Iona went on a 7-2 run over an eight minute span and took a 13-9 lead entering the last 15 minutes. In the fourth the Maroon & Gold outscored the Wildcats once again, this time a 5-2 difference. Four straight goals by the Gaels from 13:32 to 3:12 gave them a commanding 17-10 lead. Over the last three minutes the Gaels controlled the pace of the game and drained the clock to secure the victory, 18-11.             Â
