Iona SB Wins Second Straight, Shutting Out Cleveland State

BUIES CREEK, NC - The Iona College softball defeated Cleveland State 3-0 to conclude play at the Campbell University Invitational on Sunday morning. Three Iona pitchers combined for nine strikeouts in the shutout of the Vikings.

GAME SUMMARY: IONA 3, CLEVELAND STATE 0

Kara Zazzaro started in the circle for the Maroon & Gold and worked around a one-out walk to pitch a clean first inning. Haley Weaver led things off with a base on balls, stealing second and third to put herself in scoring position with one out. Jamie Sheeran singled home Weaver with two outs, putting Iona on top 1-0 in the first frame.

Granted an early lead, Zazzaro worked hard in the second inning to protect it. A lead-off double and a stolen base put the tying run 60 feet away with nobody out. Zazzaro retired the next three hitters on a foul out and two punchouts to hold the lead for the Gaels.

Iona added another run in the second courtesy of Allie Taylor's first career triple. The inning began with a double by Natalia Meray, who came around to score on Taylor's three-bagger. Weaver earned another free pass with two outs, stealing her third base of the afternoon to put two runners in scoring position. Brianna Bailey hit a 2-2 pitch to center field for the final out, though the Gaels now led 2-0.

A single started Cleveland State's half of the third and two stolen bases put her on third base with one out. Zazzaro struck out the following batter and the inning concluded with a ground ball to shortstop.

The Gaels chased the Vikings starter in the bottom of the third after putting two runners on to begin the frame. The reliever induced a pair of ground balls to record two outs, but Hannah Collins delivered a run-scoring single through the left side to pad Iona's lead to three runs.

Freshman Maddy Lowry entered in relief of Zazzaro in the fourth inning, allowing a hit and walking one batter but maintaining Iona's shutout. She gave way to Samantha Rieb in the sixth inning, who made quick work of her assignment with two hitless innings to complete the Gaels' first shutout of 2022.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Lowry was credited with the first victory of her collegiate career, allowing just one hit and striking out two across her two innings of work.
  • The Gaels' pitching staff combined to allow three hits, strike out nine hitters and allow zero runs in Iona's second straight win and third of the weekend.
  • Sheeran finished 1-1 at the dish with a run batted in and two walks. Collins and Taylor were responsible for Iona's two other RBIs.
  • Meray picked up two hits. It was her first multi-hit game of the season, joining Bailey, Emma Capuano, Jessica Chilcott and Sheeran as the only other Gaels to do so.
  • Weaver continued to up her on-base percentage, earning a pair of free passes. She also stole three bases and is now a perfect 4-4 on stolen base attempts this year.
  • Rieb earned her second save of the season, striking out one and allowing no hits in her two innings of relief work.
