ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - The No. 1 seeded Iona College men's basketball team fell to No. 9 Rider, 71-70, in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 MAAC Championship. Rider's Dwight Murray Jr. jumper in the lane with 7.5 seconds remaining led to the upset of the regular season champs.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Graduate Tyson Jolly led the Gaels with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting. With 10:09 left in the second half he drained a three-pointer to tie the score at 49-49 and scored his 1,000th career point. Jolly added four rebounds, two steals and an assist.
- Graduate Elijah Joiner added 13 points with three rebounds and three assists.
- Rookie Walter Clayton Jr. had 12 points, six assists and three rebounds.
- Sophomore Nelly Junior Joseph posted 11 points with a team-high six rebounds and five blocks.
- Graduate Dylan van Eyck recorded seven points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals.
THE OPPONENT
- Murray had a game-high 21 points to go along with eight assists and four rebounds.
- Mervin James netted 13 points and six rebounds and Ajiri Agemuno-Johnson had a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double.
- Allen Powell was the fourth Bronc double-digit scorer with 11 points.
UP NEXT
The Gaels will await their fate and their next postseason opponent on Selection Sunday. Iona holds the MAAC's automatic bid into the 2022 National Invitation Tournament by virtue of their first-place finish in the league regular season standings.
