Iona SB Holds Off Marist to Earn Split of Road DH

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Iona College softball team split a mid-week doubleheader at Marist on Wednesday at Gartland Athletic Field. After losing a lead and falling in extras in game one, Iona held off the Red Foxes in game two.

GAME ONE: MARIST 5, IONA 3

Jamie Sheeran kicked things off in the top of the first with a solo home run, her seventh of the season, tying her for the team lead with Jessica Chilcott. The Gaels looked to add some more runs in the top of the first, but stranded a pair in scoring position to end the frame with just the one run.

Kara Zazzaro started for Iona, registering a pair of punchouts in her first inning of work in Poughkeepsie. She did the same in the bottom of the second and one-upped herself by striking out the side in the third. In her first turn through the opposing batting order, Zazzaro faced the minimum of nine batters and struck out seven.

The Maroon & Gold padded their lead in the top of the fourth when Emma Capuano hit her first round-tripper of the season. The one-out, solo shot down the left-field line put Iona ahead 2-0. Kaylin Flukey followed with an infield single, but was promptly doubled off of first base on a Morgan Ritchey line out.

Zazzaro continued along in the circle, getting the first two outs of the fourth before issuing a free pass to Caroline Baratta. It was Marist's first base runner of the afternoon. Miah McDonald flew out to end the fifth as the Red Foxes' search for their first hit prolonged into the fifth inning. Zazzaro took care of Marist in order in the fifth, taking her no-hit bid deeper into the afternoon.

Chilcott, who watched Sheeran match her season home run total earlier in the game, parked one over the wall with one out in the sixth. Iona led 3-0 at the end of five and a half innings at Gartland Athletic Field.

Marist made two quick outs to begin the sixth, but just as things began to look bleak for the Red Foxes' offense, they turned things around. A two-out walk was followed by a single, ending Zazzaro's no-hit bid, and then Baratta ended the shutout with a run-scoring single of her own. With the tying run at second base, Zazzaro clutched up and struck out McDonald to escape the sixth with limited damage done.

Things unraveled quickly in the seventh for Zazzaro and the Gaels. A lead-off walk and a two-run homer tied the game at 3-3 with no one out. The next three batters went down without issue, but the first game of the mid-week doubleheader needed extra innings.

Iona put two runners on via singles in the top of the eighth, but the frame ended when Kayla Haywood was thrown out at home trying to score on Capuano's single to left field. A lead-off single in the bottom half of the frame ended Zazzaro's day in the circle. Samantha Rieb relieved her, eventually stranding the base runner that she inherited at third to send things to the ninth.

After a quiet ninth inning for both sides, Iona would load the bases with two outs in the top of the tenth inning. Capuano hit a ground ball that forced out Chilcott at second and ended the threat. Baratta walked it off in the home half with a two-run shot to right field, giving Marist a 5-3 win in extras.

GAME TWO: IONA 2, MARIST 1

After being dealt the loss in the first game working in a relief role, Rieb started game two for the Maroon & Gold. She worked three scoreless innings to begin her afternoon, seemingly getting stronger as the day went on. Morgan Ritchey provided the offense for the Gaels in the second, blasting a two-run shot, the first of her collegiate career, scoring Haywood.

Marist remained scoreless through four full innings, but trouble brewed in the fifth for Rieb and the Gaels. Marist loaded the bases with one out courtesy of a single, a walk and a hit batter. Rieb bore down however, inducing a ground out and a pop up to leave the bases full and keep the shutout intact.

Freshman Maddy Lowry began the sixth inning in relief of Rieb. Lowry retired the first batter she faced in the frame, but surrendered back-to-back singles to bring the go-ahead run to the plate with just one away. Another single loaded the bases, but Lowry escaped trouble with a fly ball and a grounder.

The Red Foxes loaded the bases for a third straight inning in the seventh, this time against Zazzaro. After loading the bases and not scoring in the fifth and the sixth innings, Marist broke through in the seventh. One run came around to score on a wild pitch, but Zazzaro shut the door by registering her 13th strikeout of the afternoon, stranding the tying and winning runs on base.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Rieb, after being dealt a loss in relief in game one, tossed five shutout innings in game two to earn her fourth win of the season. In total across the two games, Rieb pitched 7.2 innings, allowed two runs on three hits and four walks.
  • The Gaels offense hit three homers in game one, the third time this season the offense has reached that mark. Capuano's homer was her first of 2022, while Sheeran hit her seventh and Chilcott notched her eighth.
  • Ritchey hit the first homer of her career in game two, a two-run shot that was Iona's fourth round tripper of the afternoon and proved to be the game winner.
  • Chilcott reached base in both contests, extending her reached-base streak to 15 straight games. Allie Taylor saw her 11 game streak of reaching base safely snapped in the second game of the doubleheader.
  • Zazzaro made her 14th start of the season, working seven-plus innings in the circle. She allowed three runs on four hits and three walks, striking out 11 batters. It was the ninth time this season she has struck out at least 10 and the fifth straight game where she has registered double-digit strikeouts.
  • Lowry made her 11th appearance of the season in relief of Rieb in game two, registering a scoreless frame, despite allowing three hits.
  • The extra-inning contest in game one was Iona's eighth of the season. The Maroon & Gold are 4-4 this season in games that require extra frames, including a 1-2 mark against conference opponents.
