Iona Lacrosse Falls to Marist, 15-12 on Senior Day

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona women's lacrosse program fell to Marist 15-12 in the season finale. Freshman Kira Varada set a new single-season record for most draw controls with 73 this year. The previous record was 69 and was held by Jaclyn O'Leary
in 2006.    

Prior to today's match the Iona Gaels honored its eight seniors, Leah Marshall, Gabriele Thornton, Megan Collins, Emma Rippon, Carly Young, Nora Carpenter, Katherine Meyer, and Kati Paavola.  

The Iona offense was led by hat tricks from Emily Stewart, Kati Paavola. Two goals by Thornton and the rest of the four goals off the sticks of Amber Brewster, Varada, Meyer, and sophomore Micaela Fitzpatrick. The Gaels assisted on four of the 12 goals and Stewart had a team high eight draw controls.    

Sofia Votto faced 32 shots and made nine saves and allowed 15 goals for a .375 save percentage. Iona picked up 14 ground balls, controlled 20 draws and caused six turnovers. The Gaels cleared the ball much better than the last game going 14-15 on clear attempts.            

GAME SUMMARY

Marist's offense opened the game on all cylinders scoring three straight goals over the first five minutes of the game. Stewart got the Gaels on the board at the 9:28 mark. Stewart scored the next goal of the game as well but seven minutes later, Iona trailed 3-2 with just under three minutes left in the opening quarter.    

Four more goals would be scored over the last 1:40 of the first quarter, two by marsit and two by Iona. Emily Stewart notched her hat trick early and Thorton trimmed the Red Foxes lead even more. 

The Maroon & Gold entered the second frame down 5-4 but a goal by Meyer knotted things up at 5-5 early in the second quarter. Marist scored two unanswered goals, then iona answered with two of their own to keep things tied at 7-7, but two later first half goals by the visitors gave them a two goal at the half time break. 

Varada opened the third quarter with a free-position goal and trimmed the Marist lead to one. Marist answered quickly to retake the two goal advantage. Two straight goals by the Baltimore native Paavola got this game back to even at 10-10. Marist would once again close out the quarter strong with two goals, reclaiming a two goal lead entering the final 15 minutes. 

Iona opened the fourth with a goal from the stick of Thornton making it a one goal game. Marist went on their second 3-0 run of the game and took a four goal lead with seven minutes left in the game. Fitzpatrick found the back of the net around the six minute mark but the Iona offense couldn't sneak any more past the net minded of the Red Foxes and they secured the win, 15-12.
