Iona Lacrosse Holds Off Niagara For First MAAC Win

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona women's lacrosse program notches their first MAAC win of the 2022 season with an impressive 16-14 victory over the Purple Eagles of Niagara. Freshman Kira Varada led the Maroon & Gold offense once again with four goals and two assists. 

Coming off the bench Amber Brewster recorded a hat trick, Megan Collins, Kati Paavola, and Alexa Skoubas all scored two goals each. The last three goals came off the sticks of Alexa Maggiacomo, Emily Stewart, and Katherine Meyer. Iona assisted on 11 of the 16 goals with Collins notching four herself. 

Sofia Votto started and played all 60 minutes for the Gaels, making six saves on 21 shots. As a team Iona recorded 16 ground balls, seven caused turnovers, and 22 draw controls. Varada once again recorded double-digit draw controls with a team high 10. 

GAME SUMMARY

The Purple Eagles did not waste any time opening the scoring, 30 second into the game Niagara snuck one past Votto and took an early 1-0 lead. The Gaels first goal of the game came off the stick of Varada on the free position chance. Iona kept the scoring going with three more goals, taking a 4-1 lead with just under five minutes left in the first quarter.

Right before the second quarter the visitors scored late in the first, making it a two goal game. The second frame started off slow with both teams scoreless in the first four minutes. The Purple Eagles scored first making it a one goal game. Varada scored again, extending the Iona lead back to two.

30 seconds later the vitisor scored again, but the Gaels didn't waste any time and got the goal right back after Brewster buried her 11th of the year. The goal by Brewster sparked a four goal run by the Gaels. Niagara was able to score two goals in the last 16 seconds of the first half. 

Niagara opened the third quarter with a goal for the third quarter in a row. Varada and Skoubas extended the Maroon & Gold lead back to four. The visitors got on a hot streak late in the third, and took a one goal lead, 12-11 entering the final 15 minutes. 40 seconds into the final frame, senior Kati Paavola knotted things back up at 12-12. 

Two more goals by Meyer and Brewster gave Iona a two goal lead with six minutes left to play. Niagara got within one goal late in the fourth quarter, but a goal by Collins with a minute left sealed the deal and the Gaels closed out the 16-14 victory.
