Iona WSOC Earns Hard-Fought Draw Versus Army

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Army at Mazzella Field on Wednesday afternoon. Kayla Thomas scored her second goal of the season to even the ledger in the 50th minute.

MATCH SUMMARY

The Black Knights came out firing and never took their foot off the gas pedal. A flurry of early shots saw Army miss just off the crossbar and then Emma Havrilla corral a rebounded shot off the woodwork. Down the other end, Iona had a beautiful chance on a cross that Samantha Hogan tried to volley out of the air, but she watched it sail just wide. Minutes later, following an Iona turnover on the defensive side of midfield, Army broke through. Kaitlin Palaian chased down a through ball and beat the sliding Havrilla to it, lunging to get enough of her right foot on it and into the back of the net to open the scoring.

Army sent a barrage of shots towards goal in the final ten minutes of the first half, but the score would hold at 1-0 in favor of the visitors. Out of the halftime intermission, Iona flipped momentum and leveled the match in the 50th minute. Sofia Banegas played a pass up towards Thomas, who never truly controlled possession of it, who beat the keeper all the way to the lower-left corner for her second career goal.

The Black Knights kept coming on strong, looking for a go-ahead score, but never found it. Army missed just above the crossbar on multiple different occasions, keeping the score where it was at. Iona had perhaps the best chance of the entire second half in the closing moments. With the clock dwindling, Kedarjah Lewis had a free run towards goal starting from the defensive side of midfield. She raced as far as she could and with a couple of ticks left let loose a shot from just beyond the Iona word-mark on the turf at Mazzella that sailed high and out of play.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • The goal for Thomas was her second of the season. Both of her goals scored this season have been equalizers.
  • Banegas had the lone assist on Iona's goal, the first helper of her career. She is up to three points in nine matches played this season.
  • After losing three of the first four contests in the series history, Iona has now earned a draw in each of its last two matches with Army.
  • The Black Knight's non-conference resumé included draws with UConn, No. 25 Samford, Boston College and a 1-0 road loss at No. 11 Auburn.
