Iona Volleyball Sweeps Siena in MAAC Opener

LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Iona University volleyball team earned a three-set road victory (25-23, 25-22, 26-24) over Siena in the MAAC opener. The Gaels came up big in the later stages of all three-sets with Hope Matschner leading the way defensively, pouring in a match-high 26 digs. Iona's win marks the third straight season the Maroon & Gold have won their MAAC opener.

Match SUMMARY

Set 1 (25-23)

  The Gaels fell behind 9-4, but managed to counter on an 11-4 run to take the lead, with multiple kills from Morgan Madasz propelling the stretch. All three-sets saw 10 ties and another kill from Madasz leveled the opening frame once again at 19, but a 4-1 run from the Saints gave Siena a late lead, 23-20. However, the Gaels rallied, winning the final five points of the set and a kill from Fleur Wiersma completed the late comeback.

Set 2 (25-22)

Kills from Madasz, Jen Soto, and Wiersma helped pace Iona in the early stages of the second set, with neither school managing to create separation. Tied at 11, the Gaels used a  5-2 run to open up the lead and a few points later, a kill from Greta Stjade gave Iona an 18-14 advantage. Siena battled back and got as close as 23-22, but consecutive clutch kills from Julia Thomas and Soto gave Iona the second set and pulled them within a set of the win.

Set 3 (26-24)

Both teams exchanged min-runs in a back-and-forth third set, and a 4-0 run gave Iona a 9-5 lead. Kills from Wiggins and Madasz kept the lead at four but Siena rattled off an 8-4 stretch  to deadlock the frame at 20. The Gaels responded winning the next four points on kills from Madasz and Wiggins and back-to-back aces from Stajde. However, Siena managed to fight off four match points to bring the set to its 10th and final tie as Iona answered, winning the final two points on two errors from Siena, to take the set and earn the road victory.

STAT LEADERS

ON OFFENSE

  • Tamara Pichardo poured in a team-high 21 assists and Samantha Juran tallied 13 in the win.
  • Wiersma led the Gaels with 9 kills with Madasz finished with 8, both hitting an efficient .400 and.438 respectively.
  • Elena Bianchi finished with a season-high 6 kills while Soto and Wiggins both finished with five kills and Stjade tallied four to round out the offensive attack for Iona.

ON DEFENSE

  • Matschner recorded a match-best 26 digs bringing her up to 244 through Iona's first 10 matches.
  • Wiggins reached double-figures in digs for the third time this season, finishing with 10.

The Gaels are back in action, traveling to Poughkeepsie to take on Marist tomorrow afternoon, at 2:00 PM. The match will be streamed on ESPN3.
