Iona MBB Falls at Siena, 70-53

ALBANY, NY - Siena scored 20 of the first 22 points in the second half in a 70-53 defeat of the Iona University men's basketball team in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at MVP Arena. A strong second half saw the home team outscore the visitors 37-17.

THE RUNDOWN

The first half saw eight lead changes and five tie scores. Siena led by as many as five points on two occasions, the last time following a 6-0 run that made the score 25-20 with 5:15 remaining. Iona ripped off 12 straight points to take its largest lead of the half, following back-to-back three pointers by senior Berrick JeanLouis and sophomore Walter Clayton Jr. Iona led 32-25 less than two minutes later with 3:22 to play. The Saints got back to within one point with 78 ticks left before two Nelly Junior Joseph free throws in the final minute made the margin 36-33 at the half.
 
In the second half, Siena's Andrew Platek hit a three pointer on its first possession to knot the score at 36-36. JeanLouis answered with a jumper in the lane to give Iona its final lead of the contest. The Saints scored 17 straight over a 4:43 span and never led the Gaels within 13 the rest of the way.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Junior Joseph led Iona with 15 points and 10 rebounds, his eighth straight double double.
  • JeanLouis added 13 points with four rebounds, two assists and three blocks.
  • Clayton Jr. scored all 10 of his points in the first half while also adding four rebounds.
  • Daniss Jenkins led the Gaels with four assists and two steals.

THE OPPONENT

  • The Siena trio of Michael Baer, Andrew Platek and Jackson Stormo combined for 53 of the Saints 70 points.
  • Baer posted 18 points and 12 rebounds, Platek also added 18 and Stormo had 17 points and four blocks.

TEAM STATISTICS

  • Iona was out shot 47.3%-37.7% and 53.6%-27.3% in the second half. Baer, Platek and Stormo combined for 21-of-34 (61.7%) shooting. The rest of the team shot just 5-for-21 (23.8%).
  • The Gaels were out rebounded 42-30 and outscored 10-2 on second chance points.
  • Iona was even on assist-to-turnover ratio with 10 apiece. The Saints had 13 assists and 12 turnovers and took advantage with a 15-7 lead on points of the giveaways.
