RIVERDALE, NY - The Iona University volleyball team picked up a four-set win at Manhattan in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Draddy Gymnasium. After dropping the first set, the Gaels won the final three. Senior
Morgan Madasz posted a career-high 27 kills in the win.
SET 1 (MANHATTAN 27, IONA 25)
The Jaspers erased a 23-19 deficit to take the first set 27-25. Thirteen tie scores and five lead changes highlighted the frame, the last coming as Manhattan scored the final three points to earn the win. Madasz started her afternoon strong with six kills. Junior
Tamara Pichardo had 13 assists on 14 Gael kills.
SET 2 (IONA 25, MANHATTAN 20)
Another hotly contested set featured 11 ties and five lead changes. The final tie score came at 17-17 as the Gaels rallied for a 4-0 run and took a three-point advantage. Manhattan closed within 21-20, before four straight Maroon & Gold points capped by three-straight kills by Madasz to end the set. The senior right side put down 8-of-11 attempts in the set (72.7%). SET 3 (IONA 25, MANHATTAN 23)
The score was tied for the final time in the third set at 23-23 before Madasz closed strong again with the final two points. Rookie
Ava DeGuzman was 7-for-9 on attack attempts, hitting 66.7%. Pichardo posted 15 assists and Matschner had five digs.
SET 4 (IONA 25, MANHATTAN 22)
The Gaels took control with a 4-0 run following a 14-14 score. The Jaspers got within two on Iona's match point before sophomore
Mackenzie Wiggins put the contest away with a kill. Madasz posted nine kills, Pichardo 11 assists and Matschner five digs to lead Iona.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Madasz eclipsed her previous season-best 11 kills set on Wednesday at Fairfield and career-high of 18 set at NJIT last season with the 27-kill outburst. She hit .467 and added three aces and three blocks for 31.5 points. The total tied the fourth highest single-match total at Iona since 2000 and the second most in a four-set affair. It was the eighth 30+ point effort for a Gael since the turn of the century.
- DeGuzman posted 11 kills and six digs and hit .261.
- Wiggins had 10 kills and nine digs.
- Pichardo recorded 50 assists, a career-high for the third-year setter. She completed a double-double with 11 digs.
- Matschner led the way with 18 digs and was 12-for-12 on service receptions.
THE OPPONENT
- Camila Gomez had 17 kills and five digs.
- Sarah Emmons had 27 assists and eight digs.
UP NEXT
The win completes a 2-2 road trip for the Gaels who return to the Hynes Center next weekend to host Marist and Siena.
