Loudonville, NY— the Iona University women's soccer team wrapped up their 2023 campaign with a 2-1 defeat on Wednesday at Siena.
Graduate Student
Sofia Giamanco registered her team-leading third goal of the season for the Maroon & Gold. Senior
Kate McNally registered her sixth assist of the year on the goal in the 73rd minute.
Iona had a scoring chance early in the 17th minute as Giamanco sent a cross in for senior
Sadie Stout in the middle of the box for a shot but the Siena defense denied the pass. The Saints quickly turned the ball the other way as Megan Stowell drove through the Gaels zone and found Julia Dening in stride to bury the goal into the far right corner for the 1-0 lead.
The Gaels looked to score once again in the early minutes of the second half as senior
Emily Drake fired in the shot from 20-yards out but was denied by a diving stop from Angela Fini in the 47th minute. Iona kept the pressure, launching five more shots over the next 20 minutes but were unable to capitalize.
Siena added its second goal in the 69th minute off a corner set piece as Grace Dimkopoulos found Annie Bagnell eight-yards out for the one-timer that ricocheted past the Gaels defense and into the left side of the goal.
Iona was able to get on the board in the 73rd minute as McNally found Giamanco inside the box about 15-yards out. The graduate student split the Siena defense with two dribbles and rifled a shot to the right top shelf to push the score to 2-1. The Gaels had a pair of chances in the 86th minute by graduate student
Samantha Hogan and senior
Alexis Atkinson but the Saints defense blocked both attempts to hold on for the win.
The Saints held a 18-13 on shots for the game and a slight 7-5 advantage with shots on target. Freshman
Savannah Rogers recorded a game-high four saves in goal.
The Gaels finish the 2023 season 1-15-3, 0-7-3 MAAC record.
