Iona Water Polo Falls in Home Finale

Box Score NEW ROCHELLE - In the Gaels final home game of the season, Iona fell to number-six ranked Princeton University 16-9, falling to .500 (3-3) in conference play. Sophomore goalkeeper Aleksander Stavkovic made seven saves. Luka Nastic led the Maroon & Gold with three goals, Luksa Vlasic and senior Trippe Bauman added two goals each.

Princeton opened the scoring at the 6:25 minute mark, they added three more while keeping the gaels off the scoreboard in the opening quarter. The visiting tigers stayed on their run and extended their lead to five 26 seconds in. Trippe Bauman scored the Gaels first goal of the game on a five-meter penalty shot. Princeton answered the Iona goal with two more of their own taking their biggest lead of the game. Vlasic closed the gap back down to five at the 4:53 minute mark. The Tigers answered shortly, extending their lead back to six, Nastic notched his first of the game with 25 seconds left in the first half, but a last second goal by the opponent kept it a seven goal game entering the second half.

After a quick goal to start the second half by the Tigers, both offenses went cold before Nastic notched his second with 3:13 left in the third. A minute later Princeton re-took their eight goal lead. Edward Howaniec found the back of the net for his lone goal of the game to close out the third quarter. Iona opened the fourth quarter with a goal by Vlasic, two minutes later Bauman scored his second of the game cutting the Tiger lead to five. Both teams traded goals over the final five minutes, Andrew Miller and Nastic scored the Gaels final two games.

Iona returns to action next Saturday and Sunday at the 2023 Harvard Invite, Gaels will take on Salem and George Washington on Saturday.
