BOX SCORE | PDF

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Iona University men's basketball graduate student Idan Tretout scored a game-high 34 points and the Gaels outscored Sacred Heart 13-1 over the final 3:23 to grind out an 88-81 win over the Pioneers in non-conference play at the Hynes Center. The Maroon & Gold sent the near capacity crowd home with a positive result in first-year head coach Tobin Anderson's debut in New Rochelle.

THE RUNDOWN

A low scoring affair to start the contest saw Iona take a 7-3 advantage nearly five and a half minutes into the game. The pace picked up following three tie scores and three additional lead changes, the final one coming as the frame came to a close on an Aidan Carpenter layup that gave the Pioneers a 40-39 advantage at the break. Iona led by as many as eight points with 10:25 to play and Sacred Heart's largest advantage was six following a 14-0 run that concluded just under five minutes later.

The second half scored five different lead changes. The final one came with 2:01 to play. After Sacred Heart led by seven on a three-point play by Nico Galette, Iona quickly trimmed it to two on a three pointer by graduate Wheza Panzo and a steal and layup by graduate Joel Brown. The Pioneers built the advantage to five with 3:36 left with two more Galette free throws. The Gaels answered with nine straight points taking the lead on another Brown layup followed by a three-ball by the graduate with 34 seconds remaining to put Iona ahead 84-80. The Maroon & Gold held Sacred Heart without a field goal for the final four and a half minutes.
