FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona University volleyball team completed its 2023 season with a four-set defeat vs. No. 2 Quinnipiac in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship semifinal round. The six-seeded Gaels dropped the match 18-25, 19-25, 25-20, 21-25. Sophomore
Mackenzie Wiggins led the Maroon & Gold with a 15-kill, 13-dig double double.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Wiggins was one of three Gaels to record double-digit kills. She had 15.5 points and hit .135.
- Senior Morgan Madasz added 12 kills and two blocks, hitting a team best .323.
- Freshman Ava DeGuzman had a 10-kill, 11-dig double-double.
- Rookie Ezzie Thompson posted six kills and five blocks.
- Senior Jen Soto added five kills and a .308 hitting percentage.
- Setter Emma Vu recorded 28 assists and nine digs with two aces.
- Libero Hope Matschner posted 29 digs and was 31-for-32 on serve receptions.
THE OPPONENT
- Ginevra Giovagnoni posted 27 kills and 21 digs to lead all performers.
- Aryanah Diaz had 15 kills and 20 digs along with three blocks.
- Setter Damla Gunes posted 48 assists and nine digs.
LEAVING THEIR MARK
- Matschner completed her Iona career with 2,079 career digs, the second most all-time. After setting the NCAA record in the 25-point rally scoring era in digs per game as a junior in 2022, Matschner continues to lead the NCAA in the statistic heading into the NCAA Tournament.
- Samantha Juran finishes in Maroon & Gold with 2,002 career assists, the eighth most in school history.
- Tamara Pichardo posted 1,473 assists, the 11th most in school history.
- Soto's 221 total blocks is No. 13 all-time at Iona.
- The quartet is joined by fellow seniors Madasz, Elena Bianchi, Greta Stjade, Nerin Valasakos in completing their Iona careers.
