Iona Falls To Brown In Final Game Of The Season

CAMBRIDGE, MA -  Down by just three goals at the end of first period, the fourth-seeded Iona University fell 20-11 to third-seeded and number-20 ranked Brown University this morning to finish in fourth place at the Northeast Water Polo Conference Championship hosted this weekend by Harvard University. The Gaels fourth-place finish marked Iona's best ever in the NEWPC Championship.

Junior tri-captain Luksa Vlasic and senior James DiSalle led the Maroon and Gold (13-17 overall) with three goals apiece, while senior tri-captain Andrew Miller and junior Edward Imm had two goals each.  Junior William Harrington added one score.  The Gaels scored 11 goals on 35 shots on nine assists with three by Miller. In goal, senior Diego Gomez had three saves on 37 Bears shots, made four steals, one assist and had 20 goals against. 

On defense, the Gaels made eight steals with five by Miller.  Iona drew 15 Brown kickouts with five by Miller, including one five-meter penalty, while being ejected ten times with two five-meter penalties. Senior tri-captain Trippe Bauman and Vlasic were excluded with three ejections each. The Gaels turned the ball over 13 times. Iona scored on four of 14 man-up chances, while Brown scored three goals on 11 man-up chances.  Scanlon won one of four swim-offs.

After two straight Bears goals, including a five-meter penalty score, Harrington put the Gaels on the board with a man-up goal to cut Brown's lead to one 2-1 with 5:55 remaining in the opening period. Vlasic converted another power-play goal to knot the game at one all just 44 seconds later.  With three unanswered scores, Brown went up three 5-2 with 5:29 left. Just 12 ticks later, Imm got the Gaels back within two 5-3.

After Miller missed a five-meter penalty shot, Brown countered to go back up three 6-3 with 1:51 on the clock.   On Iona's next possession, DiSalle sliced the Bears edge to two, but Brown answered with 57 seconds left to regain a three-goal 7-4 advantage going into the second period.

With 1:43 gone in the second quarter, Vlasic's second goal got Iona back within two 7-5. After missing a five-meter penalty shot, Brown scored five straight goals to go up seven with 1:48 remaining for a 12-5 halftime advantage.
Vlasic's third goal on a man-up chance chopped Brown's lead to six 12-6 with 58 seconds gone in the third period, but the Bears answered on their next possession to restore their seven-score lead 13-6. Miller pulled Iona back within six 13-7 with 3:11 on the clock.In the closing 1:33, Brown tacked on three straight scores for a 15-7 cushion going into the final period.

After Brown's man-up goal with 1:38 gone in the fourth period, Miller's lob got Iona within nine 17-8 just 12 ticks later.    Following more Bears scores, Imm's second goal closed the gap to ten 19-9 with 3:17 left. Brown answered, then DiSalle found the back of the net twice in the closing 1:37 as Iona's rally came up short 20-11.

Despite today's semifinal loss, Bauman praised the "passion and composure" of his teammates throughout the season, especially his fellow seniors, who finished their Iona careers with heads held high. "This season we got to the semifinals game based on passion and composure," Bauman said. "There were a few games we should have won, but our team mentally never changed.  We played hard and never gave up on any play or game."
