Long Beach State Holds Off Iona MBB, 80-76

ESTERO, Florida - The Iona University men's basketball team fell to Long Beach State, 80-76, in the middle game of the 2023 Gulf Coast Showcase at Hertz Arena. Five Gaels scored in double-figures led by graduate Idan Tretout's 17 points and freshman Jean Aranguren's 16 in the defeat.

THE RUNDOWN

Long Beach State went ahead by double-digits less than nine minutes into the contest and led 21-10 with 11:21 to play with a 1-for-2 effort from the free throw line by AJ George. Down 28-18 with 7:30 left in the half, the Gaels went on a 10-0 run. Junior Greg Gordon's layup was followed by a three-point play by freshman Sultan Adewale, a graduate Wheza Panzo three pointer and another layup by Adewale in a 2:58 span that knotted the score at 28-28. Iona took its first lead of the contest at the 2:01 mark on a layup by Tretout. After being held scoreless for the first 17-plus minutes Tretout scored nine points in the final 2:25 seconds as the Gaels held a 41-40 advantage at the break.
 
Iona led by as many as eight points in the second half, jumping ahead 58-50 on a jumper by Tretout in the paint at 12:40.  Long Beach State stormed back with nine straight points to regain the lead as the Maroon & Gold went scoreless for a four minute stretch. Over the last nine minutes the game remained within one possession until the final six seconds. Panzo drained a huge three pointer to tie the score at 74-74 with 45 seconds left. Long Beach answered with a three pointer of their own to regain a three-point advantage. After Iona failed to score on the ensuing possession, the 49ers converted enough at the free throw line to hold off a Gael comeback.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Tretout added five assists, four rebounds and three steals to his 17-point effort.
  • Aranguren's season-best 16 points came on 5-of-9 shooting, 2-of-4 from distance and 4-of-4 from the line. He added five rebounds and two assists.
  • Panzo scored 12 points, on four three-point field goals. He also posted five rebounds with two steals.
  • Gordon had his second double double as a Gael with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Adewale recorded his first collegiate double-digit effort with 11 points and five rebounds.

THE OPPONENT

  • Jadon Jones led Long Beach State with 19 points.
  • Aboubacar Traore had an 11-point, 10-rebound double double with a team-leading six assists and four steals.
  • Lassina Traore and Marcus Tsohonis also had double digit efforts with 12 and 10, respectively.

TEAM STATS

  • Long Beach State outshot Iona 47.4%-43.1% but the Gaels held a 28-27 advantage in makes.
  • Each team hit seven three pointers, with the 49ers converting 38.9% to Iona's 24.1% from beyond the arc.
  • Long Beach was 19-of-30 from the free throw line and the Gaels 13-of-18.
  • Iona outrebounded its opponent 39-35 and had a 17-6 advantage in second chance points.
  • Long Beach State had a 21-11 lead in points off turnovers. They had 15 assists and 15 turnovers while the Gaels posted 15 assists and a season-high 18 giveaways.
