No. 18/21 Colorado Tops Iona MBB, 85-68

BOULDER, Colorado - The Iona University men's basketball team fell 85-68 to No. 18/21 Colorado in non-conference action at CU Events Center. Junior Greg Gordon led the Gaels with 19 points and graduate Idan Tretout has 18 points to lead the Gaels.

THE RUNDOWN

Colorado jumped ahead 11-4 early, leading Iona by seven within the first four and a half minutes of the game. An 8-2 run for the Gaels cut the deficit to one just over a minute and a half later. Trailing 22-16 with 11:08 left, Iona scored seven straight to take the lead when Tretout connected on a three ball from straight away. A pick and pop three pointer by freshman Dylan Saunders gave Iona its second one point lead, 25-24 at the 7:49 mark. With the score tied at 28-28, Colorado scored six straight and held on to the lead for the remainder of the game.
 
The Buffaloes scored 17 points in the first five minutes of the second half and raced out to a 59-48 lead with just over 15 minutes to play and led by as many as 20 in the half.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Gordon scored 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting. He grabbed two rebounds and had two steals.
  • Tretout scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half, including the Gaels first seven of the contest. He was one of four Gaels with three rebounds and also dished out two assists.
  • Freshman Jeremiah Quigley - earning his first collegiate start - added 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
  • Saunders posted a season-best nine points, connecting on all three three-point attempts.

THE OPPONENT

  • Five Colorado players recorded 10 or more points led by Tristen da Silva's 17.
  • Eddie Lampkin and Luke O'Brien had seven rebounds apiece.
  • Leading scorer KJ Simpson had 15 points, six rebounds and five assists for the home team.

TEAM STATS

  • Colorado out shot Iona 60.8%-42.1%.
  • Iona held a slight 35.3%-33.3% advantage from distance.
  • The Gaels had one more turnover (14-13) than the Buffaloes, but the home team capitalized on a 25-12 points off turnover advantage.
  • Colorado also held a 44-26 lead in the paint.

UP NEXT

Iona returns home for a Wednesday night tilt in its 2023-24 MAAC opener against Marist, in an early season rematch of last March's MAAC Championship game.
