Iona MBB Falls to Saint Josephs at Holiday Hoopfest

BELMONT PARK, N.Y. - The Iona University men's basketball team fell to Saint Joseph's 85-58 in non-conference action at UBS Arena. The contest was the last of a tripleheader at the Holiday Hoopfest on Long Island.

THE RUNDOWN

After junior Greg Gordon's layup at 7:18 cut the deficit to 18-16, the Gaels went cold offensively and converted just one field goal the remainder of the half. The Hawks raced ahead with a 27-6 run over the final seven minutes to take the lead for good.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Freshman Dylan Saunders posted a season-best 16 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the field with four three pointers. he added three rebounds, two assists and a steal in 16 minutes for the Maroon & Gold.
  • Gordon posted 11 points and a team high six rebounds, shooting 5-for-10 from the field.
  • Rookie Jeremiah Quigley had nine points and four assists.
  • Senior Joel Brown posted four steals in the loss.

THE OPPONENT

  • Erik Reynolds II led Saint Joseph's with a game-high 26 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the field and 6-for-8 from distance.
  • Cameron Brown had 17 points with five trifectas and a team-high seven boards.
  • The Hawks had six players score at least eight points in the win.

TEAM STATISTICS

  • Saint Joseph's out shot Iona 52.0%-27.7% and was 15-for-30 from long distance.
  • The Hawks held a 42-35 rebounding advantage, but the Gaels outscored them 14-5 on second chance opportunities.
  • Iona had 13 assists to 11 turnovers while Saint Joseph's posted 15 assists and 16 giveaways. The Maroon & Gold also had a 24-16 advantage on points off turnovers.

UP NEXT

Iona returns to action in its final home game of the 2023 calendar year when they host Patriot League favorite Colgate at the Hynes Center on Thursday (Dec. 21) at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
