Iona MBB Rallies In Second Half At The Mount To Earn Eighth Straight Win, 80-68

EMMITSBURG, MD - The Iona University men's basketball team used a strong second half to hold of Mount St. Mary's 80-68 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Knott Arena.  Trailing by five at the half, the Gaels outscored the Mountaineers 49-22 in final 20 minutes to secure their eighth straight MAAC win and reduce the magic number to clinch the No. 1 seed in the MAAC tournament to two.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Sophomore Walter Clayton Jr. led all scorers with 28 points, he shot 9-for-15 from the field with a three-pointer and a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe.  Clayton Jr. added six rebounds, four assists and four steals in the all-around effort.
  • Junior Daniss Jenkins had 15 points with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
  • Senior Osborn Shema posted 12 of his 14 points in the second half and recorded a team-best eight rebounds.  He hit two dagger three-pointers in the final frame to help spark the Gaels run.
  • Junior Nelly Junior Joseph netted 11 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two blocks in the win.

THE OPPONENT

  • Jalen Benjamin led the home team with 27 points.  He was 6-for-11 from the field and 13-for-14 at the free throw line.
  • Deandre Thomas and Malik Jefferson had 12 points apiece.  Jefferson had a team-high seven boards.

TEAM STATISTICS

  • After being outshot 48.3%-36.7% in the first half, the Gaels led for the game 46.7%-44.9% after shooting 17-for-30 (56.7%) in the final 20 minutes.
  • Iona held a massive 40-22 edge on the boards, allowing just four offensive rebounds in the contest.  The Maroon & Gold out scored its host 17-7 on second chance points.
  • Both teams matched each other with nine assists and 13 turnovers.  The Gaels took advantage to the tune of 16-8 on points off the giveaways.

UP NEXT

The Gaels host Siena in their penultimate home game of the season in front of a sold out Hynes Center on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
