FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona University men's basketball team earned its third straight win, holding off Fairfield 70-61 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on the road at Leo Mahoney Arena. The Gaels built a big, early second half advantage and held on following a late Stags' charge to earn the regular season series sweep of the Stags. Juniors

Daniss Jenkins had 18 points apiece to lead the Gaels.
THE RUNDOWN
Iona trailed for just one possession early in the first half. Fairfield stayed within two possessions, tying the score on two occasions, including 14-14 with 9:23 to play. The Gaels ripped of eight straight points and extended the run to 14-2 over a six minute span to lead 28-16 with 3:24 to play. The Stags recorded a pair of buckets to go into halftime trailing 28-20.

The Maroon & Gold scored the first six points of the second half. The run extended to 16-7 over the first 6:14 of the frame as Iona held a 44-27 advantage. Three minutes later, back-to-back buckets by Junior Joseph and Jenkins gave the Gaels its largest advantage of the game, 21 points with 10:21 left. Iona went cold on the offensive end and allowed the home team to chip away. A 20-4 Stags run made it a five point game with 3:04 to play. Iona shot just 1-for-9 from the field during the stretch. The Gaels got some key defensive stops and converted 10-of-11 free throw attempts down the stretch to hold on to the nine-point road victory.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Junior Joseph scored 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe. He completed his 11th straight and 14th double double of the season with a career-high 16 rebounds.
- Jenkins' 18 points were complimented by three rebounds, three assists and a steal.
- Sophomore Walter Clayton Jr. added 13 points with four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
- Senior Berrick JeanLouis posted eight points in the win.
THE OPPONENT
- Fairfield's Supreme Cook had 16 points and four rebounds before fouling out late in the contest.
- Allan Jeanne-Rose had 10 points and five rebounds as the Stags' other double-digit scorer.
- Iona held a slim edge from the field, out shooting the home team 42.1% - 41.4. After holding the Stags to 28.6% in the first half, the Gaels surrendered 53.3% in the second.
- Fairfield held a 39-32 advantage on the boards, but Iona outscored them 11-10 on second chance points.
- The Gaels had eight assists and seven turnovers while the Stags posted 10 assists and 15 turnovers.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Junior Joseph's 11 straight double-doubles remains unprecedented in the 21st century for the Gaels.
- Iona recorded 10 or less turnovers for the 12th time in 23 games.
- With Siena's loss Sunday, the Gaels are tied in the loss column with just Rider at the top of the MAAC standings. Iona has one less win than the Broncs' whose next bye date is next Sunday (Feb. 12).
UP NEXT
The Gaels make their annual trip to Western New York to take on Canisius Friday (Feb. 10) and Niagara Sunday (Feb. 12).
