Iona SB Wins Two on Day One at The Spring Games

MADEIRA BEACH, FL - The Iona University softball team defeated both Lafayette and Hartford on Friday to open play at the Spring Games. Kara Zazzaro and Alyssa DeJianne both tossed complete-game, two-hit shutouts and Kenadie Gonzalez went deep in both games.

GAME ONE: IONA 8, LAFAYETTE 0

Iona erupted for five runs in the first inning, taking a big lead before the Leopards had a chance to bat. Jamie Sheeran started things with her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to center. Kaylin Flukey and Gonzalez followed with run-scoring hits and the five-run rally was punctuated by a two-RBI single off the bat of Destiny Nardello.

Zazzaro tossed four-plus innings of no-hit ball before surrendering a one-out single in the fifth. She completed her fifth clean inning and the Gaels added an insurance run in the sixth. Gonzalez capped things off with a two-run shot in the seventh. Zazzaro closed the door on Lafayette in the bottom half of the frame to complete a two-hit shutout with a season-high 13 strikeouts.

GAME TWO: IONA 8, HARTFORD 0

DeJianne got the nod in game two and matched Zazzaro's game-one effort, shutting out the Hawks and allowing just two hits. Like Zazzaro, DeJianne received early run support from the Maroon & Gold offense.

Gonzalez was again a catalyst, smashing a three-run homer, her second round-tripper of the day, in the second inning. DeJianne held things down from there on out, while the offense added some more cushion to the lead in the sixth inning.

The wheels began to fall off for the Hawks in the sixth, starting with a bases-loaded walk drawn  by Allie Taylor that forced in a run. Freshmen Brooke Acker and Hannah Werth each brought home a run to push the lead to six runs. Brianna Bailey and Sheeran each tacked on a run to help the Gaels cruise to another 8-0 victory on day one at the Spring Games.
