Iona SB Tops Holy Cross, 9-7, on Sunday

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Iona University softball team defeated Holy Cross, 9-7, on Sunday morning at the Rutgers Softball Complex. A six-run fourth inning proved to be the difference for the Gaels.

GAME SUMMARY

Dani Beckham started for Iona, retiring the first two batters before a pair of errors behind her put two runners on base. The next batter was hit by a pitch to load the bases and they were promptly unloaded by an extra-base hit that put Beckham and the Gaels in an early 3-0 hole.

Iona responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on a fielding miscue by the Crusaders. Alivia Lichtner drew a walk and came around to score after an error in right center on a ball that Jess Chilcott put into play. Jamie Sheeran drove Chilcott home with a single to center, trimming the deficit to one run.

Beckham retired the first two batters in the second, but surrendered a solo homerun that put Holy Cross ahead 4-2. A leadoff homer in the third and a single forced Beckham out of the game in favor of Kara Zazzaro. She entered with a runner on and Iona trailing by three, striking out both batters she faced to limit the damage.

Iona exploded for six runs in the fourth inning, turning a three-run deficit into a three-run lead. The first three batters reached base before a wild pitch and a groundout made it a one-run game. Kayla Haywood delivered an opposite-field double that evened the contest at 5-5 and forced the Crusaders to make a pitching change. Sheeran delivered the biggest blow of the game, a three-run homer with two outs that gave Iona its first lead of the morning.

A two-run shot in the fifth brought Holy Cross within one run of Iona, but an Emma Capuano bomb in the bottom half added a cushion to the Gaels' lead. Zazzaro worked through a bases-loaded jam in the sixth and retired the side in order in the seventh to close the door on the Crusaders.
