Iona Water Polo Notches Win Over Connecticut College

NEW ROCHELLE – Leading the entire contest with 14 players scoring, the Iona University women's water polo team notched its third straight win with a non-conference victory 23-8 over Connecticut College this evening at Hynes Pool.

GAME SUMMARY

Graduate co-captain Jordan Van Reeken, junior Elizabeth Lovat and freshman Sadie Sallas led the Gaels (10-7 overall, 2-1 MAAC) with three goals each. Graduate co-captain Malia Naugle, sophomore Remy Ickes and sophomore Addison Collins scored two goals each. Graduate student Sydney Brightenburg, graduate student Karsyn Stewart, junior Amelia Gonzalez, junior Kaya Hart, sophomore Emily Geld, freshman Jenna Handall, freshman Lea Preston and freshman Lola Trujillo had one goal apiece. The Gaels scored 23 goals on 33 shots and made seven assists with two by Sallas.

In goal, sophomore Lilly Morris made five saves on seven Camels shots, one steal with three goals against in the first half. Freshman Gabrielle Brozovic made four saves on nine Camels shots with five goals against in the second half. On defense, Iona made eight steals, and blocked two shots. Iona drew six Connecticut kickouts with two by Brightenburg, while being ejected five times. The Gaels turned the ball over six times. Iona won all four swim-offs with three by Trujillo.

Van Reeken needed only 19 seconds to get Iona on the board, then followed with her second goal just 17 ticks later for a 2-0 Iona edge. Three consecutive scores from Trujillo, Brightenburg and Collins put the hosts up 5-0 with 4:17 remaining in the opening period. After Collins' second goal on the Gaels next possession, the Camels trimmed the home lead to 6-1 with 1:48 left. Two more Iona scores in the closing 40 seconds put the Gaels up 8-1 going into the second period.

After Stewart's score with 1:45 gone in the second quarter, Connecticut cut Iona's margin to 9-2 with 5:47 on the clock. After Sallas answered with her second score, the visitors found the back of the net to pull within seven 10-3.   The Gaels responded with a 4-0 run by Sallas, Hart, Lovat and Ickes on a five-meter penalty shot in the remaining 3:26 for a 14-3 halftime advantage.

With 23 seconds gone in the third period, Naugle's backhand score increased the home margin to 15-3, but the Camels answered with 6:19 left to cut the Iona edge to eleven 15-4. Four unanswered Iona goals in the closing 5:47 from Handall, Lovat, Preston and Gelb gave the hosts a 19-4 advantage going into the final period. Only 56 seconds into the final period, the visitors sliced the home edge back to fourteen 19-5. Another unanswered Camels goal got the visitors within thirteen 19-6 at the 4:05 mark.The Gaels responded with three straight scores by Gonzalez, Lovat and Naugle for a 22-6 edge with 2:01 to go. After the Camels scored twice, Van Reeken sealed the 23-8 win with her third goal with 1:18 left.

COACH THOUGHTS

Iona head coach Brian Kelly was pleased with his squad's team effort as his Gaels continue their conference schedule this weekend. "It was a nice team victory and nice to keep the winning streak going into this big league weekend," Kelly said. 

UP NEXT

On Saturday, the Gaels travel to Siena College in Loudonville, NY, for two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matches against Mount Saint Mary's at 10 a.m., and Marist College at noon.
