Iona SB Comes From Behind to Beat Columbia

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University softball team came from behind to defeat Columbia, 10-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Donald E. Walsh Field. After falling behind 7-2, the Gaels scored eight unanswered runs to come away victorious.

GAME SUMMARY

The Lions put up a five-spot in the opening frame, putting the Maroon & Gold in an early hole. Jamie Sheeran answered the bell in Iona's first turn at bat, hitting a laser over the fence in right to make it a 5-2 game. Columbia would tack on another pair of runs in the third inning, chasing Iona starter Samantha Rieb from the game.

Alyssa DeJianne entered in relief and did a masterful job, holding off Columbia's offense for the remainder of her tenure in the game. Meanwhile, Iona's offense responded in a big way with three runs in both the third and fourth innings to take the lead. Sheeran's second homer of the afternoon, a three-run shot, made it a two-run deficit.

In the fourth, Alivia Lichtner tripled home a run to make it a one-run game and Kayla Haywood followed with a run-scoring single that evened the contest at 7-7. An opposite-field single by Kaylin Flukey put Iona in front for the first time in the game.

The Gaels added two insurance runs in the fifth inning, one of which came via a solo homerun off the bat of Jessica Chilcott. The extra cushion was enough for Kara Zazzaro, who celebrated her birthday with a six-out save, her second of the season.

UP NEXT

Iona begins conference play this weekend, welcoming Mount St. Mary's (Friday, April 1) and Rider (Saturday, March 2) for a pair of doubleheaders in New Rochelle.
