Iona SB Falls to Liberty & Radford on Day One at Liberty Invitational

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Iona University softball team dropped a pair of games to Liberty and Radford on Saturday at the Liberty Invitational.

GAME ONE: LIBERTY 11, IONA 0 (5 INN.)

Maddy Lowry got the nod for Iona in game one of the Liberty Invitational against the tournament host, surrendering a pair of two-run homers in the first frame. Lowry finished the frame, but was relieved by Kara Zazzaro in the second inning.

The Flames tacked on two more runs in the second, one of which came on a bases-loaded hit batter. Liberty's Bachman allowed a two-out single to Jamie Sheeran in the first, retiring the next 10 Gaels she faced and exiting after four scoreless innings with an 11-run lead.

Iona went down in order in the fifth inning, falling to the Flames in five innings due to the mercy rule to kick off play on Saturday in Virginia.

GAME TWO: RADFORD 1, IONA 0

Despite a second consecutive complete game from Alyssa DeJianne, Iona ended up on the wrong side of a one-run ballgame. DeJianne surrendered just two hits, both of which came in consecutive plate appearances in the bottom of the fifth inning. A single followed by a double to center plated the only run of the contest, saddling DeJianne with a tough loss.

Iona out-hit Radford 4-2, two of which came from Brianna Bailey. Back-to-back one-out singles by Jessica Chilcott and Kaylin Flukey put the go-ahead runners on for the Gaels in the top of the seventh. Bailey followed with her second hit of the afternoon, but Chilcott was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second. Hannah Werth stepped to the dish with the tying and go-ahead runners in scoring position, but was retired to end Iona's first day at the Liberty Invitational.
