Iona SB Swept By Canisius

BUFFALO, NY - The Iona University softball team lost a pair of games to Canisius on Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

GAME ONE: CANISIUS 4, IONA 1

Jamie Sheeran started the scoring on Sunday with a two-out, solo homer in the top of the first inning. Canisius' Megan Giese struck out the other three batters she faced in the frame and Sheeran's round tripper would be the only damage against Giese in her start.

Iona's Samantha Rieb started the first game for Iona and held the Griffs scoreless for four innings. Rieb stranded a base runner in two of the first four innings before being tagged for three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Griffs rally began with a pair of walks before Costan blasted a three-run shot to left to put the defending MAAC Champions in front. Rieb would work through the rest of the inning without any more damage.

Staked to a two-run lead, Giese would work around an error and a walk to retire the next two batters and maintain her team's lead in the sixth. The Gaels were retired in order in the seventh after Canisius added an insurance marker in the bottom of the sixth against Rieb.

GAME TWO: CANISIUS 6, IONA 1

Kara Zazzaro started game two for Iona, stranding a runner in scoring position in the first and working around a runner on third with no one out in the second inning. Canisius would break through in the third inning after a walk, a stolen base and a double. Zazzaro would strand another runner in scoring position to end the third, though the Gaels trailed 1-0.

Iona would even the contest in the fifth frame, with the rally beginning after Kenadie Gonzalez was hit by a pitch. Kayla Haywood attempted to sacrifice Gonzalez to second, but Canisius cut down the lead runner at second. A base on balls drawn by Brooke Acker would push Haywood into scoring position and eventually Hannah Werth would drive her home with the tying run with a two-out single.

After retiring the first two batters to begin the home half of the fifth, back-to-back singles and a passed ball put two runners in scoring position. A ground-rule double would plate both runners and put Canisius ahead once more. The Griffs tacked on three more runs in the sixth before setting down the Maroon & Gold in order in the seventh to secure the sweep and take first place from Iona.
