Iona SB Swept at Manhattan on Friday

RIVERDALE, NY - The Iona University softball team lost a pair of games to Manhattan on Friday afternoon at Gaelic Park.

GAME ONE: MANHATTAN 1, IONA 0 (9 INNINGS)

Kara Zazzaro started in the circle in game one for Iona, making quick work of the Jaspers in the first turn through the batting order. Her opposition, Sophia Kiseloski, allowed a pair of hits in the first inning to lead off the game, but would escape the jam by inducing a ground-ball double play.

Jamie Sheeran doubled to lead off the fourth inning, but was eventually stranded at third to keep things scoreless through three and half innings. Alivia Lichtner tripled with two away in the fifth inning, but Kiseloski kept things scoreless by inducing a ground ball to third.

Zazzaro continued to breeze through the Jaspers lineup, tossing seven scoreless innings, allowing just three base runners and striking out 11 hitters. Jessica Chilcott pitched in with a great defensive play to end the seventh inning and send the game into extras, leaping to catch a liner and falling into the fence for the final out.

Manhattan would finally break through with the first and only run of the contest in the bottom of the ninth inning. Lauren Rende led the frame off with a sharp liner that deflected off the glove of Emma Capuano playing in at third base, putting a runner on second with no outs. After a foul out, Marika Deemer singled back through the box to score Rende with the winning run.

GAME TWO: MANHATTAN 11, IONA 3 (5 INNINGS)

A seven-run second inning for Manhattan put Iona in a big hole early on. The Gaels responded in the top of the third with two runs on a Chilcott double down the left field line, followed by a Kaylin Flukey ground-rule double to center that plated Chilcott with a third run in the frame for the Maroon & Gold. Manhattan's Deemer would strand Flukey at second to end the Iona rally.

Manhattan added an insurance marker in the third inning, though Iona's Dani Beckham did well to allow just the one run after loading the bases with no outs to begin her first inning of work out of the bullpen. In the fourth, Manhattan's Weir blasted a three-run homer to center to put the Jaspers ahead 11-3, forcing Iona to go to its third pitcher of the contest, Alyssa DeJianne. She retired the three batters she faced but a scoreless fifth inning for Iona ended the contest due to the mercy rule.
