QUEENS, NY - The Iona University softball team lost to St. John's, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
Jamie Sheeran's MAAC leading 11th home run was not enough offense as the Gaels fell to the Red Storm on the road.
GAME SUMMARY
After a scoreless first half inning from Iona's bats, St. John's posted a pair of runs against Dani Beckham. After a one-out single down the line, Beckham struck out the next batter but a walk and two stolen bases put runners on the corners with two away in the frame. Another steal plated a runner and a double into the gap scored the second St. John's run in the first inning.
Morgan Ritchey led off the top of the third with a walk, an at-bat that featured nine pitches before Jamie Sheeran blasted a two-out, two-run homer that evened the score. The Red Storm retook the lead in the home half of the third, hitting a go-ahead two-run homer of their own to grab a two-run lead once more.
Samantha Rieb relieved Beckham in the fourth, leaving two runners on base and escaping a bases-loaded jam by throwing a runner out at the plate on a ball that got past the catcher. St. John's added an insurance marker against Rieb in the sixth after a double and a throwing error. The four-run deficit was too much for the Maroon & Gold to overcome, falling to the Johnnies 6-2.
